lol if I hear the phrase “a taboo has been broken” on this issue one more time, I may start to tear my hair out. When it comes to Lebanon, Israelis and the pro-Israel crowd must 1) stop talking only to themselves and the handful of Lebanese willing to talk to them/sift through anecdotal evidence confirming baseless optimism and 2) stop assuming Hezbollah is this alien thing to Lebanon rather than an organic outgrowth of the country’s political and social conditions. Reality may be ugly. In this case it is. But I’m not sure what’s gained from denying it.

NEW--Israeli military correspondent Doron Kodosh reports: Israeli soldiers stood by and watched as Jewish terrorists set a Palestinian home on fire in the village of Jalud, near Nablus in the West Bank — with a family still inside — and beat an elderly Palestinian man. Instead of apprehending the suspects, one of the soldiers was heard telling them to scram so they wouldn’t face consequences. The soldiers had an opportunity to detain the roughly 12 settler rioters, but ended up only stopping one of them. The soldiers failed to act even though Israeli settlers rammed an IDF vehicle with one of their cars, and one of the settlers even threatened to kill one of the officers at the scene. Israeli settler terrorism in the West Bank is state-backed terror, funded and backed by the Israeli government and protected by the Israeli army.

Sharaa has his innate political talents surely but beyond that he seems to resemble, in outwardly behavior at least, the median Syrian on many big picture issues: tired of wars domestic and foreign; seeks more openness towards the west but identifies with and oriented more towards countries of the region; conservative but not too conservative; sees both Israel and Iran as adversarial states (dual belief shared more commonly than usually thought among even pro-Assad Syrians); eager to reflect a fresh and positive image of Syria even if at times superficial or over-romanticized. His shaping experiences seem to have serendipitously covered most corners of Syria: born and raised in a diverse upper middle class neighborhood in Damascus; hails from a farming village in south west; spent years in Iraq and later east Syria mingling mingling and building alliances with tribal/al-Jazira culture; and ended up for a long stint in northwest corner of the country, all making him speak “Syrian tongues” like a few of his political peers.

It’s wild that the new Syrian government and its supporters are using the fact that women spoke under fake names to discredit the report as if Syrians didn’t spend the last decade documenting abuse under pseudonyms?? And beyond that, we all know that rape survivors often cannot speak about what happened to them openly, let alone attach their names to it in a society where the stigma alone can be devastating.

What Trump has not yet grasped 6 weeks into this war is that his inconsistency and bullying statements are only reinforcing the Islamic Republic's determination to keep going until the terms and conditions of any deal or ceasefire are more balanced. This dynamic is not new. Much like during the Vietnam War, sustained external pressure can entrench rather than erode resistance. This mentality was forged during the experience of the 8-year Iran-Iraq war and was reinforced during the 12 year JCPOA negotiations. 37 days into a war against the great USA and Israel, Iran is not just going to throw in the towel. So the onus is on dealmaker Trump, who faces a stark choice between compromise and escalation. Tick tock...

@stoker_daniel @academic_la It worked in Gaza. Hamas isn’t capable of invading Israel or launching rocket barrages anymore. 60% of Gaza’s land is being used as a buffer zone. There will be no new October 7 attacks. A bigger buffer zone is planned for South Lebanon.

The IDF has informed the Israeli cabinet that the air war has reached the limits of its effectiveness in its current form of focusing on military targets. Ron Ben Yishai, Israel's premier military analyst says Israel is considering two paths: 1) Gradual infrastructure degradation. The progressive destruction of bridges, power stations, and transport links to make the regime unable to provide basic services. The downside: it takes time, allows adaptation, and lets Iran continue disrupting oil markets and striking Israel meanwhile. 2) The "Dahiya Doctrine": Ben-Yishai's preferred recommendation. This involves pre-warning civilians to evacuate specific neighborhoods in Tehran, particularly those housing families of senior regime officials and Revolutionary Guard commanders, then completely flattening those areas from the air. He argues making senior IRGC commanders personally homeless and displaced would, in his view, make them far less willing to reject Trump's ceasefire offers. Neither of these options will work. But they are both based on the intentional and massive commitment of war crimes.

While Mossad is an extremely competent intelligence agency, it has often operated in a manner that has undermined trust between US intel agencies and itself. Trust is not easily built, but it is necessary. Israel's actions at times have undermined US trust.

As a former intelligence analyst covering the Middle East, I found much more value in our FVEY partners than what we received from Israel. Funny to hear this assessment from someone, who to my knowledge, has never worked in American intelligence.
