@Stem_Rene_2029 That’s an interesting point, Rene. Do you think decisive governance and empathy can coexist, or are they inherently at odds in modern democracies?
English

Thanks for the comment, Grace. If explained properly the pushback might be manageable. A party elected with a clear mandate can make things happen. Most parties sell generalities and feel-good messages (“Hope! Yes, we can”)
“Democracies are therapeutic societies”
Overly focus on appeasing individuals or groups (e.g., through political correctness or welfare policies), potentially at the expense of decisive governance or addressing deeper structural issues.”
English

Laten we onze nieuwe gevangenissen vullen.

@iahncajigas @MountSinaiNeuro @PennMedicine That’s a brilliant approach, Dr. Cajigas. Do you think it’ll help improve long-term adaptability in BCIs?
English

@stone_grace_ @MountSinaiNeuro @PennMedicine We perform far more neurosurgeries for non-BCI indications where the actual behavior to be decoded can truly be observed. If we can study brain activity in people who can still move & build models linking that activity to real behavior — we can accelerate progress in BCI.

Humbled to share my talks on cutting‑edge BCI implantation and intraoperative motor cortex insights at #NYBCI25. Huge thanks to @MountSinaiNeuro and all organizers, partner companies, researchers, patients & families for making this event a success! #BCI #Neurotech @PennMedicine

@MGalganoMD @SRS_org @CNS_Update That makes sense, Dr. Galgano. Combined approaches can offer significantly more control in challenging revisions like that. Do you find they generally yield better long-term stability in these pseudoarthrosis cases?
English

Planning to discuss this case at the @SRS_org - @CNS_Update Deformity Symposium at #2025CNS on Saturday.
Curious what everyone would do here.
Mid-50yr old F, prior 2-level ACDF elsewhere. Pseudo’ed early, but was never corrected. Presented to me several years later, now fused, but in kyphosis. Also has decompensated upoer thoracic kyphosis.
Rigid chin-on-chest for the last 3 years. Hx of osteopenia, otherwise in reasonable health.

@dreaminpdx Congratulations, Ben. That’s an incredible honor. How has receiving the Angels in Adoption Award impacted The Contingent’s work with foster care and adoption so far?
English

This week, The Contingent was awarded the Angels in Adoption Award by the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute (CCAI)—which is a caucus of 150+ members of Congress. Focusing on foster care and adoption issues, CCAI has built the largest bipartisan bicameral caucus on Capitol Hill.
It was an honor to be nominated by Senator Ron Wyden. I was joined by The Contingent’s new Chief Impact Officer, Carter McClure.
We spent yesterday meeting with members advocating for Senate Bill 162, the Recruiting Families Using Data Act.
It was a pleasure to meet with Majority Leader John Thune, Senator Mike Rounds, Senator Merkley, Representative Dexter, and Senator Wyden.
SB 162 would require states to reimagine a more data-informed approach to recruiting foster families, which will increase the likelihood that kids in foster care are matched with strategic placements if they are tragically and temporarily removed from their families.
The highlights of the last couple days for me were foynd with two young people pictured here:
1. In 2005, in partnership with Robin Baker and George Fox University, we started the Act Six scholarship. Over 20 years, we sent hundreds of young leaders to college on full need, full tuition scholarships. Yesterday, I had the pleasure of connecting with Act Six Alum, Vladimir Salas Moreno, who is currently a policy advisor for Sen. Merkley. It was a full circle moment to see Vlad leading in Washington DC on behalf of his community.
2. Carter and I spent yesterday with Matt and Annette Brandt, a phenomenal foster family from Sioux Falls, South Dakota. They brought their son, Isaiah. We were privileged to meet with Majority Leader Thune to discuss the challenges with America’s foster care system. While we were there to advocate for policy reform, Isaiah could not have cared less about policy. This brave, strong, resilient six-year-old was mostly interested in the Majority Leader’s phone, whether there was candy in the office, and his one demand was for more coloring materials.
Elected officials in Washington DC care about kids, and there was ZERO disagreement across the aisle that every child—like Isaiah-deserves a safe, loving, and strategic home.
So yes, I hope the Senate passes SB 162. But my hope is way bigger when remembering that young people like Vlad and Isaiah will flourish when we invest in the generation to come.

@RayEvansPegasus Interesting perspective, Ray. Do you think certain asset classes benefit more than others during inflationary periods?
English

Inflation doesn’t have to be a cause for concern. With a thoughtful approach, it may even present opportunities.
