There is no reported case of a state not only imprisoning an environmental protestor but also seeking to deport them. In connection with his involvement in the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge “Just Stop Oil” protest in October 2022, Marcus Decker was given the longest prison sentence ever imposed for a peaceful protest in British history at that time. He served 490 days in prison and has since been subject to very severe and restrictive bail and licence conditions. His risk of re-offending has been assessed as extremely low. Today, in a first-tier appeals process, his lawyers will ask the Home Office to consider very carefully the legality of a deportation decision — and whether it even serves the public interest to break up the family life he has lawfully established here with his partner, Holly, and her young children. 🚨 BREAKING: MARCUS WINS DEPORTATION APPEAL Marcus Decker, who was facing deportation after being handed a prison sentence over 2 years for climbing the QEII Bridge in 2022 with Morgan Trowland, has won his appeal against the deportation order. After serving 16 months and being released in February 2024 on tag and still having to report to the home office every day, Marcus, a German citizen, faced a second punishment – the threat of deportation - that would have separated him from his partner and two stepchildren in the UK. After the hearing, Marcus said: "After an intense day of legal proceedings and an hour of harrowing cross-examination for both my partner Holly and me, I’m deeply relieved that we’ve won today! I feel this is a huge victory for the climate movement and for the laws protecting peaceful protest in this country as a whole." Marcus has huge legal fees after fighting the threat of deportation.
