Hey Rachel, Big fan but the main issue I have with your take, and most takes, is that it seems the MVP discussion is so difficult, that people dismiss Luka because of defense so they don’t have to think about the other nuance. People see Luka has LeBron and AR. What they don’t see is that he’s doubled, blitzed, and facing more D pressure than anyone in the league. Despite this, he’s still THE best scorer and the best playmaker in some aspects (Jokic in some aspects as well). They also don’t see the 2nd and 3rd rotation when Luka is running with Laravia, Vando, Hayes and keeping them in games. When J-dub subs, Shai gets Ajay. When Chet subs, Shai gets iHart. When Cason subs, Shai gets Caruso. That nuance doesn’t get talked about. He has more gravity than anyone else, plays with the worst lineups, and he’s still been the best offensive player in the league, and his team has better defense when he’s on the court.

Helloooo friend- I don’t think you have to be an elite defender to win MVP. I think this year’s MVP race is so tight with good candidates that defense is gonna be a decider for many people. Curious why I’m like the 18th person to say all this in the past few weeks and Lakers’ twitter is suddenly up in arms? I’ve historically been so pro-Luka (including highlighting when he tries on defense specifically) that people keep sending me my own pro-Luka takes today as proof he’s really good 😂 I also have him higher on my MVP ballot than most. (Also I believe one of my best-known male peers just called Shai the Michael Jordan of this era offensively. I’m not exactly the one leading the day with crazy takes.) Luka is PHENOMENAL. I’ve said for years he’ll win MVP one day. Right now this year he doesn’t have my 1 overall vote, but hey, I’m always open to smart people who can change my mind, and some healthy debate.
