Late reply due to holiday. 1. The live band tracks were recorded at Soundcastle. 2. Then we moved to Smoketree, which was my habitual mixing place due to the Neve 8078, and, being a 1 room facility, was quiet and focussed. No kookie-loos. A long period of Thomas' work on his synths, plus band overdubs on the more sample-based tracks led us eventually to the final mixing in the last days of 1987. 3. Budapest By Blimp was quite a complex production culminating in the final scene in the stadium, which had to be created from 7 or 8 friends of Thomas singing the chorus. 4. The drum machine loop started Thomas' writing for the song. On a long flight from UK to LA, he pulled his tiny Casio keyboard from his carry-on, programmed the drum loop, and proceeded to conceive the music and lyric. 5. It's known Thomas made clever use of his Fairlight sampling synth, but the real exotic counter melodies and melodic solos were done on the PPG Wave, which this veteran of the synth "revolution" recalls as a true progression in that buzzy era. Though it was a beast to handle. 6. I made Thomas come in to Soundcastle at 7AM to record his vocal, or at least the low parts. He was worried about the low register so I suggested "morning voice". I told him not to talk between waking and recording. 7. I have a vague memory that I asked Thomas about the lyric, the story, and he was obscure with his answer, as he would remain until the present. But I seem to recall he at least informed me on the title phrase: "Budapest By Blimp" referred to Nazis escaping from Berlin via airship in the last days of the Reich.

I’m also getting ready to begin directing my first film. I’ve never done that before and it’s a biopic about Busted from my perspective, how it all started and the gaps in between from 1991 to 2025 . Not a TV documentary. It’s going to be a feature film with actors!

My first concert review for ⁦@StarTribune⁩ was of ⁦@toddrundgren⁩ in 1974. Saw him again last night at Pantages Theatre in Minneapolis in a generous 125-minute performance with many deep cuts, excellent band and wonderful vocals and harmonies. highlight: Hawking
