We have just been told that the police will be taking no further action. This has been a disgraceful episode and we will be speaking to lawyers about taking legal action. I also expect a full inquiry into why they repeatedly lied to us and who authorised the arrests.

The anti-Royal protesters tell me they hadn’t used the megaphone. So the arrest, it seems, was simply for bringing it. “They could have confiscated it,” says one.

The monarchy represents exclusion, elitism and hereditary power and privilege at the expense of everyone else. There are no good reasons for keeping it.

The police have arrested what appear to be peaceful republican protesters in Trafalgar Square. It’s in everybody’s interests, especially the Met’s, that they explain exactly why as soon as possible. No matter what you think about monarchy, this is a deeply disturbing moment.

Let's set this out for the hard-of-thinking: before we left the EU, British passports didn't have to be stamped to get into France. Since Brexit, they do have to be stamped. Stamping a passport takes longer than not stamping a passport. Hence delays.
