I’m sorry, but I’m not gonna be nicer about this. There was a time when we, as gay men, had a more "live-and-let-live" approach rather than demanding everyone affirm our sexuality. Furthermore, we didn't police sexuality and what other gay men were doing. We were simply men who happened to be gay. For the most part, we did our own thing and kept to our own spaces. After gay marriage was legalized, however, we started doing... something else. I blame social media. With each generation following millennials has come less an understanding of individual freedom, boundaries, and how to mind our own fucking business. Fast forward to today, the unique experience of gay men has been blurred if not erased and absorbed into the social amalgam that is ‘queerness’. We've also taken the aggressive approach that everyone must not only tolerate us, but approve, affirm, and even applaud our lifestyle. This desperate need to be validated by our peers not only hurts our cause, but erodes the very notion of freedom and individual liberty. It is a pernicious mentality. Sorry, but we're not one big happy family. Our experiences and struggles aren't the same, and lumping all marginalized peoples into a single community does more harm than good, in my opinion. Your experience is not my experience; your struggles are not my struggles—and vice versa. What's more, I don't need to be in everyone's face telling them they have to accept my way of life or else they should be shunned and face ostracization. That is antithetical to a functionally free society and the free marketplace of ideas. Moreover, it is antithetical to what I believe. This entire queer groupthink we’ve developed isn't my style. I'm an individual first. I believe in freedom of thought, not this obnoxious social movement of perpetual victimhood. I find it to be an utterly repulsive and demotivating mentality.
