Yma Sumac, a descendant of the last Inca emperor, 1950s... Born Zoila Augusta Emperatriz Chávarri del Castillo in 1922 in Callao, Peru, Yma Sumac became one of the most distinctive voices of the 20th century. Her stage name, often translated from Quechua as “how beautiful”, proved fitting. Sumac stunned international audiences with a reported four-octave vocal range, effortlessly leaping from deep contralto tones to piercing, birdlike highs. She broke through in the United States with her 1950 album Voice of the Xtabay, which fused Andean-inspired melodies with mambo and Latin jazz. The record became a sensation and launched her into performances at Carnegie Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, and major world tours. Draped in dramatic costumes reflecting her claimed Incan royal lineage, she cultivated an aura as exotic as her sound. In 1951, she reached Broadway, and in 1960 she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. During the Cold War, she toured the Soviet Union in 1961, an unusual move for a Western star. @CaramelRhapsody Joan Hickson was my entry to a screen version of Miss Marple. I adore the series pacing, costumes & of course, the acting. However, Dame Margaret Rutherford made her indefatigable. She even danced The Twist in ‘Murder At The Gallop’.
