Yesterday (October 16, 2025), on behalf of Jagruta Karnataka, I had the opportunity to meet Shri Eshwar Khandre, Hon’ble Minister for Forest, Ecology and Environment, Government of Karnataka, and submit a formal letter requesting that the State Government impress upon and recommend to the Government of India to actively participate in and sign the United Nations Global Plastics Treaty. Plastic pollution today represents one of the most pressing environmental and health challenges worldwide. Today India is the world's largest plastic waste producer. India generates nearly 9.3 million tonnes of plastic waste annually, with only around 30% being processed or recycled. The rest finds its way into landfills, rivers, and oceans, eventually degrading into microplastics that contaminate our food, water, and air. One of the studies states that by 2050, there will be more microplastics in the ocean than the fishes. Today there is plastic (microplastics) in the food we eat, water we drink and the air we breathe. Nearly 16,000 chemicals goes into the producing of plastics, out of which nearly 6000 are hazardous and most of them have been banned by most developing nations and in the European Union and some African countries too. The Global Plastics Treaty, being negotiated under the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) through the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) on Plastic Pollution, seeks to establish a legally binding international framework covering the entire lifecycle of plastics, from production and design to waste management and health impacts. The initiative has already gained support from over 80 countries across the world. Jagruta Karnataka, a political organisation from Karnataka, firmly believes that Karnataka, as a progressive and environmentally conscious state, should play a leading role in shaping India’s stance on this global treaty. Through this submission, we have urged the Hon’ble Minister from Karnataka to recommend that India take an active role in the next treaty adoption meeting of the Global Plastics Treaty and to align state and national efforts toward sustainable plastic management and circular economy models.
