On 10 May 1944, anti fascist militant Olga Bancic was guillotined by the nazis in Stuttgart. Olga Bancic (under the codename Pierrette) was a Romanian born communist militant and one of the most important figures of the French Resistance during World War II. At a young age, she joined workers’ movements, organised strikes, and was arrested and tortured many times because of this. In 1938, she migrated to France and began working with local communist groups there. During the nazi occupation, she joined the FTP-MOI, a resistance organisation made up of immigrant workers. She played a key role in the group led by the famous poet Missak Manouchian. She was responsible for the transport of weapons and explosives, gathering intelligence, and coordinating operations. Nazi propaganda prepared the famous “Red Poster” featuring photographs of Manouchian Group members in order to portray the resistance fighters as “criminal foreigners.” Olga was the only woman in this group. Even though her photograph did not appear on the poster, she was one of the most active members of the organisation. In late 1943, she was captured by the French police and handed over to the Gestapo. Despite severe torture, she did not give the names of any of her comrades. Manouchian and the other male members of the group were executed by firing squad in February 1944. However, because French laws of the period did not allow women to be executed by firing squad, Olga was transferred to the German city of Stuttgart. On 10 May 1944, at only 32 years old, she was executed by guillotine. The letter she wrote to her daughter just before her execution is considered one of the saddest and most powerful texts of resistance literature: “My dear child, my little love Dolores... When you read this letter, your mother will no longer be alive. But do not cry, your mother died so that you and all children could live in a freer and happier world.”
