It's become popular to pretend that aim is "easy" or "unimpressive". This is a purely modern delusion which can only exist in the era of hero shooters, where aim/dodge were deliberately reduced in importance by game developers to create a more accessible environment for new (unskilled) FPS players.
The whole point was to reduce the barrier of entry for new players because aim is hard and that's bad for player retention.
I can say this as someone who did NOT start my 20+ year competitive gaming career in the FPS genre. I was top 10 in WoW arena, and top 500 in StarCraft 2 before I ever touched an FPS. I've also played my fair share of fighting games and other less mechanical genres. I have a deep appreciation for the many forms of skill in various games. That said:
Objectively speaking, aim is likely the deepest single skill in all of gaming.
This was not a controversial statement 10 years ago.
"Aim" is in reality a collection of many skills, most requiring hundreds of hours to reach proficiency. There are 3 primary categories:
• Mouse control (which is usually broken down into about 6 sub-categories such as reactive, control, static, etc)
• Reading (which I break down into: perception, comprehension, and prediction)
• Movement aim (which by itself is easy, but has complex interactions with dodge, which is another deep skillset you'll have to manage simultaneously)
There is no player who can perform anywhere near the theoretical optimum in all aspects of just aim by itself. Aim by itself has more depth than most competitive games in their entirety.
And you have to do it while dodging. And then do that while actually playing the rest of the game (decision making, tactics, ability usage, situational awareness, etc).
Thought experiment:
What would happen if the OW devs made every hero in the game use precision hitscan weapons with pinpoint bullet sizes and model-accurate hitboxes, and rebalanced all of the heroes to reflect this?
It would become immediately obvious that most of the people saying aim is unimpressive are in fact completely incapable of aiming to any respectable degree. Most of them would drop to around plat. The higher ranks on all roles would be mostly filled with mediocre (by current standards) hitscan players, because they're (for the most part) the only people who have any skill at aiming.
Suddenly, the unimportant skill of aim would become critical to winning, and, like magic, good aim would be considered impressive again.
The "aim is unimpressive" crowd would then begin to go through the years long process of learning to play--and if they have the talent, dedication, and correct mindset to overcome the many plateaus they'll face--eventually earn their place at higher ranks again.
Of course, in reality, the game would immediately die, because aim is hard, and most players do not want to learn to do anything hard.
