@R82357246 It was the first tsuba I ever bought. I love it quite a bit.
English

@adachi_aus Thank you so much, much appreciated.
English

@suishaken Here is the army one. Has quite a few charts on platoon and squad formation and distancing.

English

@adachi_aus Is there an explicit stated distancing squad members in a IJA (or SNLF) rifle squad for each soldier written? And does this change from the 1920s to the 1940s? Is there also writing on how much space troops should keep from a vehicle such as a tank?

@adachi_aus Admittedly I don’t know what terms to start looking in the NDL. My Japanese is very poor outside of sword and aviation terminology.
English

@suishaken Honestly the infantry manuals and tactical movements are something I've never really looked into, but they should be archived on the NDL
English

@shinobu_books How much has the Detective Onihei series if that info is public? It’s been going so long at this point.

@theericjacobus As someone who has 8 years of kenjutsu 3 days a week even a pole with no blade will give you a workout due to the different body mechanics. Chinese actors generally are only used to floppy or unweighted prop swords, so a real wooden shaft is a much different world.
English

@suishaken Three stab movements in succession being the only choreo is weak sauce
English

If Xu Haofeng is doing Chinese HEMA, then can someone explain why this guy is stabbing with a hooked blade? I'm guessing spear movement doesn't work well with a sickle.
Kinen@JetKinen
@theericjacobus That's Xu Haofeng for you. He's more interesting with weapons. That way the MC can just like hunt down the dude's hands to disarm them or something like that.
English

@theericjacobus I guarantee the actor has barely ever held a real pole weapon with a properly tapered shaft. Most wushu poles have no tapering either, and those are obviously not real weapons.
English

@suishaken Hmm... I'll take your word for it, but the affordance of the blade makes a thrust look like a lame technique. Especially when that's the bulk of the movement.
English

@HistorianZhang I'm descended from pre-1949 Shanghainese and very often I am reminded that my grandmother dropped all the old Shanghainese cultural bullshit to so I wouldn't suffer as badly.
English

My relative's kids in high school in Shanghai average like five hours sleep a night. It's unsustainable and bad for everyone

@sakana_no_sippo There is a reason bushi were required to keep a yari in their home if they could fit it. Films reflect that detail well, although it doesn’t always appear.
English

@suishaken The naginata is a powerful weapon, but mastering it requires skill. In peaceful modern times, if you're using it for home defense, the spear might be superior to the naginata.
English

@sakana_no_sippo Sparring against naginata is the most difficult weapon I have ever sparred against, and I’ve sparred against rapiers and European longswords. Weapons that can be accelerated so fast with that reach is far more difficult than a normal yari (not including jumonji or other yari.)
English

@suishaken The naginata is not suitable for group combat, but it is said to be the strongest weapon when used by a single person.

Another aspect is the quick dismission of kobudō oral and written history. People often ignore these histories even if there is multiple written period documents relating to the discussion. It is pointless to discuss kobudō histories with people who are not apart of a school.

One of the more frustrating aspects of discussion about the flaws of antique swords is Japanese discourse is often far more polite, whereas the Western discussion automatically assumes the worst and treats the discussion as trolling. Is it tiresome to act like an asshole all day?
