Brief thread about this to try and get the framing right. Predicted this ages ago, was told I was wrong, and that seems to be because people will obstinately refuse to listen when it comes to something that happens in their own department and they like the people involved.

Substitution of doctors with nurses and AHPs - badged as ST3 equivalent after a Masters and no exams - is a pillar of the NHS 10 year plan It’s an experiment on the public by @NHSEngland without ethical approval or informed consent by @CMO_England Are the Royal Colleges and @AoMRC complicit? They can’t say they haven’t been warned

It’s not controversial or punching down to say you need a medical degree to work as a doctor It’s just common sense Leadership that have enabled this have a lot of explaining to do IMHO

The BMA has warned that the widespread use of “non-doctors” in medical roles is “simply not safe” and may be driven by hospitals using staff who are cheaper than doctors to save money theguardian.com/society/2026/a…

We have uncovered a haphazard approach to the use of Advanced Practitioner (AP) roles by NHS trusts. Our investigation has revealed almost half of hospital trusts are using non-doctors to fill doctor rota gaps.   APs can play an important and valued role in patient care. But they should not be asked to substitute for doctors to address staffing gaps.   Patients shouldn’t have to worry about whether NHS managers have asked non-doctors to deliver care that only doctors can safely deliver. @wesstreeting This is what everyone is taking about today. The demise of the NHS as we know it. Where you should be seeing a doctor and you’re not. We’re short of doctors because you deny them posts. Yes, of course a MDT it’s important, but not a team that should have a doctor and doesn’t.

@DpcGem @Okletsgo000 @fletchjack And hence why there are further strikes and more doctors than ever before leaving the NHS and the UK. The only people in this situation, created by the government, who are winning are the government. The public and the NHS are losing.

@sumitriptan @Okletsgo000 @fletchjack Doctors got 0.1% less offered than the 5% gov got. The 3.5% is a recommended amount from the pay board, the government still have to award it overall. Thats why you are now only getting the 3.5 recommended, you could have had more but the BMA committee said no 😂

If any of Matt’s Stockton constituents have a stroke outside of office hours, on any day of the week, they will be denied a particular life saving stroke treatment called mechanical thrombectomy. We don’t have enough radiologists in Teesside to deliver that stroke treatment out of hours in an already stretched service. His Tory govt’s approach to workforce planning was a binfire and his constituents are suffering as a result. Instead of solutions, he is more interested in muzzling those raising the alarm, to the continued detriment of his constituents.

'We would ban resident doctors from striking. We need to get tough with these guys.' @MarkWhiteTV challenges Shadow Policing Minister Matt Vickers on the Conservative Party's handling of NHS strikes, as he criticises Labour's approach to negotiating with the BMA.

@DpcGem @Okletsgo000 @fletchjack Yes that is quite literally what I said. The government didn’t give 4.9% though, they only gave 1.4%. The total is still less than what the MPs awarded themselves, and on a global market you’ll find less doctors willing to work in the UK, leading to 📈waiting lists.

@sumitriptan @Okletsgo000 @fletchjack What? 😂😂😂 They were offered 1.4% MORE than the 3.5 DDRB recomendation which is 4.9%, no matter how desperately you try to spin it as less. The mathematical gymnastics you lot go through is incredible!

@DpcGem @Okletsgo000 @fletchjack They were given 3.5% from the DDRB already, so actually offered 1.4%, all whilst the MPs gave themselves 5%. There is a global market for doctors, so what you’re seeing is doctors leaving to work in countries where they are being remunerated fairly.

Realism would be a good place to start. They were offered an average of 4.9% after getting 30% the last few years, all whilst the economy is in the toilet! As forbthe government not talking, did they not agree a deal with the negotiating team from the BMA, who then rejected it out of hand without even asking their members?

What have you done to stop nurses pay from being eroded as chair of congress for the RCN? Nurses have been hammered by pay erosion and below‑inflation deals, and the RCN hasn’t delivered any strategy to stop it. So watching you attack doctors, the only group actually pushing back is appalling.
