IF I LIVE WITH BIPOLAR DISORDER…
Please remember that my stability depends on consistent routines, adequate sleep, and predictable daily rhythms. These are not preferences; they are part of managing a chronic mood condition.
Help me protect my sleep. Insomnia and reduced sleep are early signs of mood escalation, and maintaining regular sleep is one of the most effective preventive measures.
Support me in keeping structure in my day. Regular meals, activity schedules, and social rhythms reduce the likelihood of both depressive and manic episodes.
If I begin withdrawing or slowing down, understand that this may signal depression rather than disinterest. Fatigue, loss of motivation, and quietness can be symptoms, not choices.
If I become unusually energized, talkative, optimistic, or driven, do not assume I am simply feeling good. These changes can indicate early mania, and early recognition is essential.
Please do not stigmatize my need for medication. Pharmacotherapy is a core component of evidence-based treatment and helps stabilize mood patterns over time.
If my emotions appear intense or rapid, know that mood dysregulation is part of the condition. Your calm presence helps me regain perspective without shame.
Let me identify and communicate my early warning signs, such as irritability, restlessness, reduced sleep, or loss of interest. Being able to name these signs increases my ability to intervene early.
When I am struggling, please do not argue with my internal experience. Validation and steady support help me de-escalate far more effectively than confrontation.
Help me remain connected to others. Social isolation is strongly associated with worsening depression and mood instability.
Acknowledge the effort it takes to manage this condition. Living with bipolar disorder requires ongoing monitoring, self-awareness, and cooperation with treatment.
And please stay in my life with steadiness and clarity. Supportive relationships improve outcomes, increase adherence to treatment, and make the path back to stability easier to navigate.
