it is horrifying to me how much we've dumbed down what kids can understand. Not only is the Hobbit a children's book, it only got published because publisher Stanley Unwin gave the manuscript to his 10 year old son to read. He loved it and the book went to print.

@bazashc Have you ever read it??? It’s 100% not a children’s book and whoever says that is lying to you. Not only is the vernacular dated and elaborate but the sentence structure and lengthy writing is often hard to get your head around as an adult. Love that book! but it’s not for kids

@NoahRettberg horeography The problem is that neither are accurate for the historical period... Bronze age Mycenaean armor looked like this, btw this is also why the talon of Achilles was the weak point of the entire armor... Nobody really want to see it in movies /1

When I was a children’s bookseller I constantly had parents come in asking “how do I get my kid to stop reading captain underpants” or “how do I get my kid to stop reading dog man”. I was always struck by the fact that parents were asking me how to get their kid to STOP READING!
