Erosion over the past month has left the Line 5 pipeline just a few yards from being exposed to Bad River. This could mean an oil leak into the river, which flows into Lake Superior. The Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa is seeking an emergency shutdown & purge of Line 5.

An apology is not a substitute for a public vote. Sympathy cannot replace transparency. Heartfelt regret does not move us forward. The truth – the whole truth – remains hidden. Why? Who benefits?

Sunrise Movement member Jayla Simon says by the board not divesting from fossil fuel corporations now they “are violating every MSU community value that makes up the social conscience framework.”

"The resolution asked that the board committee charged with investing MSU’s $4.4 billion endowment meet publicly and be more transparent about its decisions. The resolution is non-binding; MSU’s board could vote on adopting it, or ignore it altogether." A public vote is needed.

Many of us could not make it to the protest against this event that should have never happened. Our gratitude goes to Jo and those who did. Thank you for standing with survivors.

STATEMENT: An institutional crisis began under Simon’s leadership. It is not over. Administrators must STOP minimizing what has happened at MSU – and what happens still. Instead, we need transparency and transformation.

Thanks to @ASMSU_Pres Jo Kovach for calling on the MSU Board of Trustees to stand with survivors and hold a public vote today to cancel the reception for former president Simon. Their voice is powerful. Are any trustees listening?

The portrait is a contractual obligation. The reception is not. We have to do better than “it is what it is.”

Four students spoke to the MSU board about the divesting in fossil fuels, an issue addressed for 1.5 years. "You still refuse to listen to us," said Vallen Krikor of the Sunrise Movement MSU. "You have the responsibility to listen to your constituents and act on their concerns."
