I think it would have been far better if the tripods had emerged from meteor strikes, like in the book and the earlier movies. People go to the smoking crater all agog and THEN the tripod rises. Super-effective in the 1950s version. Having the tripods have been buried "centuries ago" was just stupid. And makes the Martians stupid because didn't they encounter our disease germs them?

@Agrail exactly, every output is a hallucination by definition. it's actually a shallow system. with complex systems 'on top' it might be fine for the next 50 years but it won't stop having fundamental misgivings, won't ever be the next step

@super6plx This is not a regrettable flaw that can be fixed. Its smithed into the very architecture to do so. It's the "generative" in GPT-Models.

I think these images show fairly well how ChatGPT is not intelligent but rather is just a mathematical formula that spits out a piece of text that's statistically likely to be right. There is no understanding, no intelligence, just a whole lot of maths spitting out a string.

@Agrail you can work around this and still use it to get great useful results for real work but if you want this issue to be solved and have something like 'genuine understanding' or simulated understanding, we're gonna need something else on top of these models to do it

@Agrail yep, as long as it looks like 'something' in the dataset, it will happily output something you don't like that matches the training data at least a little bit, or if the likelihood of the words is just too low to get a clear output

You have no idea how much I resent AI for completely ruining a perfectly good sentence structure: "It's not just x – it's y." You cannot write that anymore. Everyone will assume it's AI or get derailed wondering if it's AI. We've been robbed of an entire sentence form.

@AaronBergman18 @justalexoki the issue is really not the hunger imo, it's the energy levels being down (for 3-5 day fasts) and not being able to do anything else that gets you the most. you can often feel totally hunger free ironically

@justalexoki nah even I'm with this guy. when fasting you realise how much of an activity it really was in your day. and when you are without food for days at a time you don't want to do anything else, so you are really bored a lot of the time. that's the actual reason more than anything

Which means all information can be transfered by being able to change those states in two places. Which we now know we can do.

the speed of light is a hard limit and any sci-fi future that involves FTL travel or even communication is simply off the table for our species.
