I'm never getting over the fact that romance as a genre, as the HIGHEST selling genre, exists largely because straight women fantasize about being loved and treated kindly by men and men constantly make fun of this because they think it's just that unrealistic that they could cherish women and that women are stupid in the first place for wanting such an impossible thing.

One of the things poppin into my neurodivergent eye is the fact that, very atypically, Shane seeks closeness to Ilya, when he is freaking out. It means that Shane has reached the level of trust and intimacy with Ilya, where withdrawing and isolating during emotional dysregulation, which would be more typical reaction, is no longer the way he comforts himself. At this point it becomes clear that they are together, partners, the-two-of-them, a unit, something real.
