Huge boom heard in Loudoun Co and surroundings last night ~11p. There were storms in area. Boom probably positive lightning strike from elevated convection. Thunder can sound louder in elevated convection b/c temp inversion beneath storms helps trap channel sound waves, allowing them to travel farther. Positive strike often louder b/c has higher electrical charge & peak current than negative strike, heating air more intensely & creates stronger shock wave, resulting in louder, more explosive thunder. And yes, 401 ka, per mention below, is extremely strong, many times stronger than typical bolt

@MikeTFox5 More concerned about the tornado risk since the setup could produce a stronger tornado than usual around here. For potential wind damage the trees are still bare and have dry ground which can help mitigate tree damage compared to later in the spring

HRRR, Hi-Res NAM, and RRFS. All have an active afternoon in the DC region, as one would expect from our first Moderate Risk day in a few years. Primary concern around the immediate DC area will be with the squall line later in the day. Likely in the general time frame of the evening commute. Strength of the low level jet suggests storms could mix down winds of 70-80mph+ at the surface, so straight line wind damage is the biggest threat here. The *best* forcing for tornadoes looks like eastern SC, NC, & VA to me, perhaps extending into Southern Maryland/Eastern Shore depending on which model is right with the timing. That said, any storm that happens to fire ahead of the primary squall line will have the tendency to want to rotate given the curves seen in the forecast hodographs. So wouldn't rule out some warnings closer to home either. Embedded, brief tornadoes/gustnados embedded within the squall itself ("kink in the line rotation") will be a threat as well. Active weather day Monday. We'll be busy!
