A major @IEA report out today shows that the transition to net zero emissions would mean lower energy costs globally than if we continue on our current path Scaling up clean technologies is good for affordability as well as for cutting emissions More: iea.li/4aM2zNn

I've noticed a pattern of misinformation over the last few days. No, the EU has NOT adopted its #CarbonRemoval Certification Framework #CRCF and the Net-Zero Industry Act #NZIA. Let's bring some clarity to this. In the case of CRCF and NZIA, the Parliament and the Council (the Member States) have finally approved their negotiation positions. That's what happened over the last couple of weeks - this is what the big announcements were about. Getting something through the Parliament or the Council does not mean the EU has agreed on it. And now we're at the crucial point - the negotiations ("trilogues") where the Commission defends its proposal, the Parliament pushes its amendments and the Council pushes its changes. The text will still change a lot. It's the final result of the negotiations that eventually becomes law. So, for both the CFCF and NZIA, we're now in the "negotiations/trilogues" box. The only rule of thumb I've seen hold most of the time is that if two institutions want something, the third one will need to compromise. This is based on my own experience after spending close to 100 hours in trilogues. Save the visual for the future to track where your legislative file is in the process. Quick disclaimer: this is a simplified visual for a co-decision process, the one relevant for CRCF and NZIA.

NEW DATA & ANALYSIS - Who Can Pay for Carbon Removal? Today we publish an update of the Ambition gap paper I wrote with @CarbonGap last year, with new data. Companies with low emission have the greatest profits per tonne they emit and the largest capacity to pay the full cost of their emissions. When you earn 100,000 USD per tonne you emit, a 200 USD carbon fee is very affordable. If you can afford to pay the cost of your emissions you should. However, our analysis shows that ALL sectors could afford to remove the last 10% of their Scope 1-3 emissions with permanent carbon removal. AND, contributions from high emitters could generate the MOST money in absolute terms, even if they only pay very little per tonne they emit, or buy very few tonnes as a share of their emissions. Big emitters should also start supporting CDR and other external climate solutions, but they will be very far away from paying the full cost of their emissions, and thats ok since we need them to spend most their money internally on reductions. The post has interactive graphs to let you explore the profit per tonne and emissions of companies, see what different carbon prices would mean for different sectors as a share of their profits. We will make the whole dataset available shortly. See next tweet for link to the post.

Zeker.

Good news (finally), for the first time it seems possible to reach the Dutch climate goals of 55% emission reduction by 2030. And this even excludes new carbon removal :-)

@TvanHattum in his #mansholtlecture: biodiversity loss and climate change, solve both or solve neither. So yes we have a plan. Transform our land (less cows etc), to grow healthy food _and_ all materials for houses, products etc. Base next economy on new plants instead of old plants (fossil resources). Integrate and interlace nature, wetlands, oceans, with regenerative human-natural ecologies. We have already started; this can and will be done. Creating this new society = protecting biodiversity and reversing climate change. #mansholtnature

In my op-ed in today's @FT, a historic moment for the global energy sector Just with today's policy settings alone, @IEA projects demand for each of oil, gas & coal is set to peak this decade – driven by the striking rise of clean tech like solar & EVs, and economic shifts in 🇨🇳
