I have watched a friend go from owing $126,000 in taxes down to $91,000 in 12 months. We've met a few times. He runs a content agency doing ghostwriting for founders. Built it from a side hustle, runs a second business on the side, and is on pace to clear 7 figures by year end. For the first 2 years, he was at $5k-$15k a month. Accounting was an afterthought at the time. A couple months back, the agency started really scaling. Grew to a team of 8 people, across two businesses, $750k coming in this year. Plus the tax bill was climbing. The projected tax bill for 2026 was $126k. 42% of his income. He realized if he kept treating tax as a once-a-year thing with his CPA, he'd pay that (and maybe more). We found a few ways to put $41k back in his pocket. The S-corp election alone cut $15k. A pass-through entity election from the 2025 SALT cap update cut another $8k off his state taxes. Reworking his QBI deduction around the PTET added $12k more. His tax rate dropped from 42% to 36%. He came to us worried about his CPA who never talked with him much. Now he's got much more confidence in his financials going into 2026. It all started with wanting to be more proactive. Bringing on a better partner while he focuses on growing the business. That way the more money he makes, the more money he gets to keep. And put it towards scaling his business even faster.

If I just wired $50k-$100k+ to the IRS And my accountant is going to disappear until next tax season Here's my full game plan for 2026: • Make taxes predictable (estimates + planning all year long) • Build a 12-24 month tax roadmap that's updated quarterly, not once a year • Implement low-hanging fruit first: QBI deduction, Augusta rule, accountable plans, maxing retirement accounts • Only then look at capital allocation strategies (equipment leasing, oil & gas, bonus depreciation) • Set aside cash based on quarterly projections, not guesses • Build a Q1-Q4 review process (Q2 & Q3 are where the real work happens) • Use strategies that generate 3-5x deductions on capital deployed • Work with advisors who project liability months in advance, not days before filing • Prioritize strategies requiring zero capital before writing big checks • Never jump to complex strategies before books are clean • Ask quarterly: "Has anything changed that affects my plan?" • Target $17K-$250K in annual savings using the right sequence • Stop winging it and treating taxes like a surprise bill This alone could put $20k+ back in your pocket
