Archivist, @RedCross. I curate exhibits, manage collections, give tours, and answer lots of questions about Red Cross history, but all my opinions are my own.

Do you remember patiently waiting for your favorite song to come on the radio? 📻 Radio communication was the only way these Red Crossers could call for support after Hurricane Cecilia in 1970. They'd use the radio to order food and shelter supplies out of the local high school in Portland, Texas.

Today, thousands of Red Cross & Red Crescent volunteers gathered in Solferino, Italy, to join the “Fiaccolata,” a torchlit procession following the path of our founder Henry Dunant. @ifrc we believe in passing the spirit of humanity & compassion.

Beyond his research & leadership in blood plasma preservation & storage, Charles Drew said his most important innovation was training the next generation. He trained a cadre of Black surgeons at @HowardU. Read his story: bit.ly/4bHIUzF

We're commemorating 143 years of our lifesaving mission! ❤️ Our founder, Clara Barton, was inspired by the Red Cross movement in Europe, which provided neutral aid to those injured in combat. After volunteering with the @ICRC during the Franco-Prussian War, she brought the movement to the United States. On May 21, 1881, Clara founded the American Red Cross and was president of the organization until she retired 23 years later. Today, her legacy lives on through every Red Cross volunteer and employee who brings help and hope across the nation and around the world.

Check out how the Junior Red Cross brought its A-game. 🏀 The organization introduced public playgrounds to countries across Europe in the early 1920s, including France, Belgium, Turkey and Serbia (formerly Yugoslavia). They became a refuge for children who experienced World War I to be physically active and build friendships. What really made the program a success was when the Junior Red Cross introduced basketball to the grounds. The game quickly became a favorite among thousands of kids who would play day after day, even in the rain! 📸 First two photos courtesy of the Library of Congress.

As we recognize #BlackHistoryMonth, we celebrate African American leaders like Frances Reed Elliott Davis, whose passion for nursing and helping communities led her to become the first African-American nurse at the Red Cross. redcross.org/local/new-york…

Why I'm running for President of the @IFRC? This is a critical time in the world — and people more than ever lean on the Red Cross Red Crescent National Societies. The most pressing humanitarian challenges cannot wait. I care about our National Societies and the people we serve. We cannot do it alone. But we can together. My campaign platform outlines my vision for the future. I am committed to localisation, efficient governance and a smart vision for the future. As President, I will lead a Federation where we listen and engage in meaningful dialogue with ALL our members. I will not be quiet in the face of humanitarian needs. I will tirelessly raise your voices and implore the world to respond urgently to those most in need. I will leverage our partners, resources and donors to empower and enable National Societies to do what they do best — help the most vulnerable. Learn more about my vision at redcross.org/kateforbes.

More women in leadership positions at the Red Cross Red Crescent movement? Yes, please. In over 100 years of history, we only had one female @IFRC President. We need more Margaretas, Natias, Aminas, Annabellas — and Kates. Glow Red growing strong!

Today's humanitarian needs feel overwhelming. But Red Cross Red Crescent National Societies are uniquely positioned to respond. I want to be the next @IFRC President to build #ForwardTogether with volunteers, staff, leaders and partners across our network.

Ever wondered what it takes to become an archivist? To become a guardian of history, one often needs a master’s degree in history, library science, or archival studies. Classes cover document preservation, digital archiving, and cataloging. #ArchivesU #ArchivesMonth
