Today the baseball world commemorates Jackie Robinson Day! On 15th April 1947, Jackie Robinson broke baseball’s colour barrier, becoming the first African American to play in modern Major League Baseball, when he made his debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Robinson went on to be named Rookie of the Year that season, MVP in 1949, and in 1955 helped the Dodgers beat the New York Yankees to win the World Series. In 1997, MLB retired Robinson’s uniform number, 42, across all MLB teams.

Today, we commemorate International Women’s Day by honouring the remarkable girls and women who take part in baseball across Britain. Last year, over 10,000 girls and women participated in baseball events, including MLB First Pitch events, in the UK. Women’s involvement in baseball is steadily increasing, with seven women’s teams registered to compete in 2025, and many more women participating on mixed teams. Baseball is truly a sport for everyone. Our GB Women’s team will represent the nation in Europe this summer and is currently preparing for the tournament. British Baseball has 10 new Level 6 umpires! The new umpires gained their certification last weekend in Brighton after attending our first foundation umpiring course of 2025. Over 100 members of the British baseball community are booked into our 2025 Level 6 courses over the next few months and there is still time to register yourself for one.
