@Uber I only chose XL because I’m 6’ 6”. Most of the time I get small SUV’s/mini vans. Some are terrible for tall trying to stretch out and relax after a flight. Do you have a recommendation or solution. I just want head space and leg room

Two standouts from Cathedral High School workouts this morning… Senior guard Deric Cannady and sophomore guard Brady Windle. Cannady brings veteran leadership and toughness to the group. Highly sought after small college prospect. Windle showed some real flashes of potential.

@Coach_Rube We will always sprint first. Today I was looking for some striders post workout and he asked to be timed. Certainly not ideal but he is 15 and we have some wiggle room. Have to keep it fun. Thanks for your input. We struggle with the shin angles on takeoff.

@swindle72 Sprint first, lift after. Also front shin should reflect desired projection angle. When foot is too far forward initial impulse is too vertical.

@carmenbott @swindle72 If my son wants to play summer hoops when he’s older, I’ll be damned if he doesn’t improve. I could care less how many games his team wins, I better see some pure skill / IQ / team development / and fun or I am demanding a refund. You got me going @carmenbott 😂✌🏻

It's the summer of '92 and I'm visiting my grandparents solo in Florida. I'm 14. The main activities were the dog track, dinner at 5pm & movies with my grandfather. He wasn't into movies so he'd see whatever I wanted as long as it was "appropriate". I hatched a devious plan - that turned disastrous... First thing to keep in mind: We weren't seeing movies on opening weekend. No. My grandfather did not spend money on entertainment. We were hitting the Delray 6 Cineplex built in like 1958. $2 movie tickets for films that had come out months earlier. Now to point #2... The movies available to me on this trip in the summer of '92 were the new releases that came out in the spring of '92 No opening weekends These were movies (back then) caught in the dead period: 2 months out of the theater and 5 months from being at Blockbuster So... In the spring of '92 the ultimate "I want to see this but I'm too young but I'm a teenage boy how can I see this" movie came out: Basic Instinct This is pre-internet. I was in 8th grade. I knew NOTHING about it other than Sharon Stone was hot and I heard you saw boobs... So I float to my grandpa that we see Basic Instinct. I dance around the plot and why I'm excited and call it a "Michael Douglas" movie. The guy from Wall Street (which I also hadn't seen). My grandfather says "fine" - then out of nowhere asks my grandmother to come. Whaaat? Now I'm freaking out. I don't know much about this movie, but I KNOW my grandmother shouldn't see it Especially with me. But there wasn't anything I could do. I wanted to see it and couldn't think of a way to tell my papa that grammy shouldn't go... So off we went... The whole ride in I'm half-excited / half-terrified... We pull up. Get 3 tickets for $6. Get 3 popcorns for $3 and... The theater is PACKED. It's loaded with horny old WWII vets wanting to see Sharon Stone naked. "This must be some picture," my grandmother says.... Ugh. My grandparents wave to various friends as we try to find three seats. I'm mortified, realizing what's about to happen. What have I done? We end up in the 2nd row up front. Me, jammed in between my grandfather and grandmother. I'm a sandwich of humiliation. The movie starts... I don't know if you remember the beginning of Basic Instinct But there's nudity. And sex. And more nudity. And I'm watching it. In public. Sitting between my grandparents... I wanted to disappear. As the opening credits roll and as the sex on the screen gets more intense... My grandfather blurts out so the whole theater can hear: "You see that, Geraldine! We should have been actors!" The joke brings the house down. It was like a peak Chris Rock punch line. The entire room is hysterical. Then he says loudly: "You're not gonna believe this! But my grandson took us to see this picture! I should listen to him more often!" Another wave of laughter rocks the theater. I wanted to shrink to nothing. I didn't know embarrassment could make you shake. But I was vibrating... For the next 100 minutes or so I had to watch Sharon Stone's boobs ten feet tall on the big screen in the front row. Sitting between my grandparents. Red faced. Filled with regret. What a movie haha. Imagine a genius 161 years ago who: • Ran Harvard's 1st gym • Coached a dozen sports • Owned his own boxing studio • Was Harvard's 1st Black instructor • Pioneered fitness equipment you use today For the 99.9% of you who have never heard of Aaron Molyneaux Hewlett, here's how he predicted the fitness future: It's the 1850s in Brooklyn, New York. By day, young Aaron is working as a porter. Carrying bags. Unloading luggage. Manual labor. By night, he's studying exercise. Training. Fitness. He's also boxing. Becomes one of the best fighters in Brooklyn. He's so good in 1854 he quits his job as a porter and opens his own gym in his home to train fighters. He calls it "Molineaux House". It quickly becomes a popular sparring academy. Becomes Aaron's lab. He hones exercises & equipment: Clubs, medicine balls & more. Word spreads... By 1859 Harvard comes calling. They're opening a gym. They want him to run it. He'll be the 1st person to run the 1st gym at America's premiere college. He'll also be their 1st Black instructor. Molyneaux gladly accepts the challenge and moves to Cambridge, Mass... As the man in charge of training at Harvard, he takes it upon himself to coach, well, everything: • Boxing • Baseball • Gymnastics • Lifting He fills his gym with equipment most people had never heard of before. He instructs people in new movements. Pretty soon... Molyneaux decides to open his own gym in 1861: The Cambridge Gymnasium Now he can train students AND the general public. Here is the gym announcement & membership prices. $12/year. Ha! Also... Molyneaux writes a letter advertising the gym... And uses it to share his entire training philosophy. Remember, he's writing these things 160+ years ago: "It cannot be denied that the art of preventing disease, is far preferable to that of curing it. And for this reason... "Gymnastic exercise may be considered as almost a universal medicine." "As there is scarcely any disease, whose further development could not be prevented... or have been cured by bodily exercise." Amazing. He could be a fitness influencer in 2022. He continues... "You who have a slight cough...or miserable digestion, or an occasional headache, or feeling of lassitude or lack of energy... These may all be cured by vigorous gymnastics [exercise]." And finally, his closer is fantastic: "You can have health if you will have it. Only go to the gymnasium; it will restore color to your cheeks as well as roundness to your form... and happiness to your heart." Incredible, right? He was 16 decades ahead of his time. The moment I read about Aaron Molyneaux I became instantly more curious. Forget about being ahead of his time. He could see the fitness future! If you enjoyed learning about his life, please share this story and follow me @Jon_Finkel for more writing on fascinating people, fitness, fatherhood and more.
