They called themselves “New Democrats” — pro-balanced budgets, welfare reform with work requirements, tough-on-crime laws, free trade like NAFTA, and the death penalty. Bill Clinton balanced the budget, expanded the earned income tax credit for working poor, and passed big crime bills. The party was trying hard to win back working-class white voters and didn’t lean as far left on economics or social issues as they do today. The Democrats in the 90s were at least trying to portray the image of working for the interests of Americans. Today everything they do is against the American people and pushing their Socialist agenda.
