things that helped me the most: - nice cool bedroom - no screens 1h before bed (kindle is ok but orange) - dim room 2h before bed - magnesium glycinate - pitch black bedroom while sleeping - hepa air filter - extremely consistent schedule +-15mins always - go outside and drink water when i wake up - good multivitamin (i like life extension 2perday) also im reading exhalation by ted chiang its very interesting would recommend.

both berberine and dhb inhibit complex I. same mechanism. dhb is actually delivering it more efficiently. (turner 2008) metformin blunts vo2max gains 50% and destroys mitochondrial respiration improvements. measured in muscle biopsies and not gut. (konopka 2019) metformin blunts lean mass gains. measured directly in skeletal muscle with increased ampk phosphorylation and suppressed mtorc1. (walton 2019) these effects were observed in muscle. if systemic complex I inhibition is the mechanism, your logic inverts: 100mg dhb produces 7x higher plasma berberine than 500mg oral berberine. higher plasma = more delivery to muscle = more complex I inhibition that actually matters "less gut exposure" is irrelevant if the problem is systemic. moon 2021 actually showed more adverse events with dhb than berberine. (but small n) zero studies on dhb sparing training adaptations exist. youre making efficacy claims the literature doesn't support

DHB does convert to berberine — that’s the point. But the kinetics and distribution are different. DHB produces higher plasma berberine with lower gut exposure, meaning: Less mitochondrial Complex I inhibition in the GI tract Lower AMPK overactivation in muscle (→ fewer training adaptations lost) Far fewer GI side effects (almost zero). Better metabolic effects at lower doses Same molecule downstream, very different pharmacology upstream. Berberine ≠ DHB in practice. That’s why athletes tolerate DHB dramatically better than berberine or metformin.

Insomnia is inextricably linked to vitality. Ray talked about how people who get on thyroid suddenly need a lot less sleep than is considered ‘normal’. Those of you from UMC homes: I bet your dad slept less than 6-hours a night, and yet maintained a relatively energetic disposition. There are a lot of catabolic processes involved in growth and differentiation: Shedding milk teeth and fat, neural pruning and refinement, bone resorption and remodeling, tumor necrosis, dissolving unstructured collagen, follicular turnover… Very mentally active people tend to be insomniacs. The greatest minds ran on very little sleep. Nabokov, Proust, Mishima, Da Vinki, etc. At some point, if nothing works, you might as well lean into it and drink coffee after dark so you can make the most of your nocturnal hours. No point staying up till 7AM scrolling your cellfone, tossing and turning. What a waste. Take it as a boon and do something meaningful with the extra hours afforded to you. If you’re not up for abstract work then leave the house and experience burning aliveness under the night sky. Choose a pretty star and learn its trajectory so you can navigate the planet by its light.
