i have two friends who are 30 and pregnant right now. both eat well, exercise regularly, are generally healthy. one has had no pregnancy symptoms and sailed thru the first trimester without feeling pregnant. the other was too sick to function, vomited for months, could barely walk up the stairs. i think the unpredictability of pregnancy and childbirth is so upsetting for some women that they develop superstitions about all the things they can control to ensure an easy time. if you actually look at how things work, it’s pretty obviously just a lottery.

Yet another friend with a child turning 16 next week. Hasn’t gotten a learner’s permit. Zero interest in a driver’s license. I keep hearing this same story. What’s WRONG with these kids?!?! On my 16th birthday, my mom took me out of school to take my driving test. Same for everyone I knew. Even if you couldn’t afford your own car, you could beg the use of the family station wagon occasionally. Freedom. Independence. Heck, privacy on a date! Are these kids giving all that up for scrolling TikTok and an occasional Uber?

Honest answer? There’s nothing to do anymore. Lots of places where kids would hang out together have made it a point to force them out. You can’t really go around hanging out as a group of minors in public anymore without someone getting uppity. Why go through all that work when everyone can just talk to their friends online

@laparbuku when they go to 0 places bc they don’t want to do any planning and prepping for it bc it’s “too much work” is laziness. Not bc they are healing, not bc they are financially hurting, not bc they don’t feel comfortable just whipping their boob out to feed.

We were able to go to the beach and stay for 10 hours with our daughter who’s 4 months old and I think that the parents who say they can’t do things like that are just too lazy to plan and prep for it.

@kkrespawned Exactly this. Also, if no-one buys an item off the registry, usually the registry site gives the couple 10-20% off the item if they buy it themselves. So some people “pad” the registry with things they know won’t get bought so they can buy them later at a discount.
