@uglyluhan that’s quite the case for Malays on Borneo island in general. 90% are of Dayak/Indigenous origin that has assimilated into the Malay ethnicity, from Pontianak to Sarawak to Brunei. Not that many Melayu jati from Sumatera Timur

For the Malayans who don't get it, any Sabahans who get labelled as Malay are generally of Dusunic origin who converted to Islam. Until recent decades, they weren't considered Malay even though they may practice Malay culture

Bahasa Melayu is the most pointless language to learn outside of familial reasons there is very little need to acquaint oneself with such inferior language. The Malays do not reign supremacy in science and economics and have very little cultural relevance on the world stage. Learning English and Chinese is all you need.
