The Flower Duet opens Act I of Lakmé, the opera by Léo Delibes that premiered in Paris in 1883. The story is set in India under British rule. By a river, Lakmé, daughter of a Hindu priest, goes down with her maid Mallika to pick flowers before bathing. The lyrics speak of nothing but jasmine, roses, and the gentle current: pure calm, without a shadow of conflict. ✨ That peace is a trap set by the story. Minutes later, a British officer invades the garden and sees Lakmé. The two fall in love, her father swears revenge and stabs the officer. When he chooses to return to the army, Lakmé eats the leaf of a poisonous plant and dies. The calmest duet in the opera repertoire is the heroine's last happy moment. And this melody was nearly unknown outside opera houses until it became the soundtrack of a British Airways commercial: the world hummed the tune without knowing it was born of forbidden love and suicide. 🎤 Giving voice to that calm are soprano Anna Netrebko and mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča, live at a gala in Baden-Baden, conducted by Marco Armiliato. This isn't a staging of the opera: it's two divas at their peak, together only to sing.
