I think part of my love for fungi is the truth found in the central fact of their being: that we live in a world where no collapse, however grievous, must ever be wasted; that life can riot gloriously, devouring loss and decay; the holy mystery of “trampling down death by death.”

In the past 24 hours I’ve danced my boots off at my brother‘s wedding reception, been first on the scene of a drunk driver’s bloody rollover, preached a homily, and sat for a couple hours laughing and crying my goodbyes with a dear dying relative. Life is so good, and so much.

Wild blackcaps—my favorite Oregon berry. (Like red raspberries, ethyl formate is responsible for their sharp, smoky taste, a chemical which happens to be present in many galaxies. Thus, eating a handful of these is, somewhat literally, experiencing the “flavor” of space.)
