78 Bangladeshi workers who had been working in Saudi Arabia returned home on Ethiopian Airlines, transiting through Ethiopia before heading to Bangladesh. When they arrived at Shah Jalal Airport, they were shocked to discover that some of their luggage locks had been broken and items were missing, causing widespread anger. They blamed the airline, which had handled their baggage throughout the trip. Some of them were seen crying after losing the results of years of hard work abroad.

In 1977 a tense meeting was held in Aden South Yemen to meditate between General Mohammed Siyad Barre of Somalia and Colonel Mengistu Haila Mariam of Ethiopia; The meeting attendedby Fidel Castro of Cuba, Erich Honecker of East Germany, Salim Rubia Ali of South Yemen. They suggested Somali republic, Somali region of Ethiopia and Djibouti be one entity and rest of Ethiopia another, forming confederation, General Siyad (RIP) accepted but Col. Mengistu refused, saying Somali will dominate political landscape.
