When the digital divide bites back. 🛰️🦎 Our team just returned from Brazil, having deployed our first Taara link in Rio de Janeiro. Along the way we responded to an emergency request to deploy our very first Taara Beam link across a river deep in the Amazon. That's when we experienced a unique form of interference: an alligator who chomped at the base of the monopole, knocked off the unit, and tried to consume it in a single chomp. As we scale Taara’s technology to the farthest reaches of the planet, we are constantly reminded that the most resilient systems are those that mimic nature’s adaptability. We build for the unexpected — vibrations, heat, rain — but nature always provides a new edge case. The alligator test wasn't in our spec sheet. The future of connectivity isn't just about light; it's about building tech rugged enough to be consumed by the global environment it serves. The good news? We recovered the hardware, the link is back up, and it's still pinging. If our tech can survive the jungles and jaws of the Amazon, it’s ready for anything. A couple weeks ago at #MWC26, we introduced Taara Photonics Platform, a radical approach to connectivity that shrinks the core functionality of high-speed communications into a photonic module the size of a finger. This photonic core allows us to control light's interaction with the atmosphere and send enormous amounts of data over the air – without any moving parts. And with it, we unveiled Taara Beam, the first product built on this platform. History gives us the blueprint. In the 1940s, computing relied on massive and power-hungry vacuum tubes. By the 1970s, the microprocessor converted room-sized into pocket-sized, by integrating an entire CPU onto a single silicon chip. Today we are witnessing that same transition in connectivity. We are moving from bulky optical assemblies and integrating the core functionality of wireless optical communications into a tiny photonic core. “The idea behind this technology—called a phased array—is not new. But turning it into a commercial optical communications device, at Taara Beam’s scale and range, is where others have so far fallen short. [Taara Beam] must steer its laser link across kilometers of open air…. Its [photonic core] splits the laser beam carrying the data into more than a thousand separate streams, delaying each one by a closely-controlled amount. The result is a laser wavefront that can be pointed anywhere the system directs.” It’s like pebbles tossed into a pond. “Dropping pebbles in a careful sequence can create interference patterns in the waves that ripple outwards. ‘These thousand emitters are equivalent to a thousand stones,’ Mahesh Krishnaswamy says.” And delaying the phase of each of them allows us to steer the wavefront whichever direction we want it to go. From interconnected balloons to breaking data center bottlenecks “Taara is altogether something a little bit rarer… a fundamentally different physical layer that doesn’t ask carriers to throw away what they already have…. Operators can stand up ‘virtual towers’ with fiber-class backhaul in a matter of hours rather than months.” @sdxcentral's @benwodecki spoke with Mahesh Krishnaswamy about shrinking the next generation of wireless backhaul into a small photonic core. By applying silicon photonics with phased arrays, it transmits data at speeds up to 25 Gbps with solid-state beam steering — dynamically directing light with precision with no moving parts. But this innovation extends beyond wireless backhaul. Taara’s roadmap includes integrating more functionality directly into this photonic core  — making it smaller, faster, and more energy efficient over time. “As we look forward into the future, the rate-limiting step is going to be our ability to communicate, and we are planning to build products which are in hundreds of gigabits per second," said Mahesh.
