@DonaldClark @Steve_R_Price The word that stands out here is Support. The reality is the students are doing input/output. You have offered an off ramp from thinking/creating/analyzing/synthesizing…all skills that will be lost or never even gained when subbing AI for learning

Different. AI is used largely to support essay writing, get some research, write, refine, restructure, that's how good writing works. Sure some shortcircuit. Essay mills were one-shot purchases, largely known and tolerates by HE, as exposure would heve meant reputation damage on a massive scale.

Imagine back in the heyday of online essay mills, if the push had been to teach students to use essay mills ethically and to develop essay mill strategies. Or if we had accepted that essay mills were okay for grammar and organization but taught Ss to make the essays their own.

@Steve_R_Price I really benefited from not using Canvas much. Senior grades are due and many of my colleagues were panicked. Something to be said about good ole’ pen and paper.

LMSs like Canvas were generally adopted without much questioning and quickly accepted as the inevitable future. We’re seeing some of the pitfalls this week. We face far worse if we don’t start questioning AI. At least those voices seem louder this week.

@Steve_R_Price I feel like the words AI and student don’t go together. Students are there to learn and develop expertise. AI seems like it’s for those who could do it by themselves and are merely using a tool for extra ideas/efficiency.

Like most everyone, I keep hearing from faculty about how students are abusing AI, despite all of our "use AI ethically" initiatives. Might be worth asking if AI is actually an ethical tool?

@Steve_R_Price I think there are different purposes. Close reading of passages helps students take a look at specific moments, and the style/craft the author used to create that. While whole book builds stamina to look at the story/character arcs and broader themes.

The "whole books" campaign is picking up steam. I'm not opposed to reading entire books. But be careful, because this is where you get summaries and general overviews. If you want close analysis and drawing meaning from the text . . . students have to get to specific passages.
