Two things can simultaneously be true: 1. Democratic *politicians* need to meet voters where they are in order to win elections. 2. Democratic *non-politicians* who consider yourselves to be allies need to convince your friends and family to be better than this on these issues.
Armand Domalewski@ArmandDoma

the idea that you can just keep hitting the “be more economically left wing” button in hopes that voters will not notice you have positions on social/cultural issues they strongly disagree with is honestly quite condescending

@thinkingshivers @BecomingCritter And I've chatted pre-contest with students from the teams that end up solving 0 problems, and they're enthusiastic and confident, they talk about a lot of different problems and algorithms they've seen, etc. The gap between expected and actual performance is huge.

Do you agree that the SWE hierarchy pretty much boils down to ‘years of experience’?

@mattyglesias "in the very recent past it was a pretty marginal problem in the United States" splcenter.org/resources/repo… "LGBT people...are victimized at 8.3x the expected rate...Jews were victimized at 3.5x the expected rate, blacks at 3.2x, Muslims at 1.9x, Latinos at 0.6x, and whites at 0.2x."

@nikicaga My sister: "As I've gotten older I realize the importance of finding good personality matches" *Proceeds to casually swipe left on a bunch of guys who liked her I would consider out of my league* Me: "Err...?" My sister: "Well I have to have *some* standards"

@PolarGlobal I received an email saying my account would be deleted unless I read and accept your Data Notice. The problem is your link to your Data Notice does not work. Was this a phishing email, or is there something wrong with your site?

@AndyMasley I dunno, I tried explaining once how corporations being maximally greedy results in certain pricing behavior and I got accused of shilling for them because the explanation made too much sense as opposed to them being cartoonishly evil

Are you aware of anyone who believes "Economics is wrong and fake because humans aren't actually simple rational actors/homo economicus" Who doesn't also believe "It's extremely naive to assume corporations aren't literally always maximally greedy"?

The fiscal impact of bills is computed on a 10-year horizon. Discussion of the impact is sometimes on a 10-year horizon, and sometimes with annual numbers. This often results in mix-ups (possibly intentional, possibly not), like this "plan" where money out = 10x money in.
Hunter📈🌈📊@StatisticUrban

Per them, this would raise roughly $405 billion in 2026. Let's just tackle the first policy - roughly 260M Americans live in households that make <$150k/yr. To give each $3k/yr, that's $786 billion. You actually cannot make a strong welfare state by only taxing 1000 people!

@uriahz @DanielW_Kiwi @Duderichy It is true that wage theft dwarfs burglary in terms of economic impact. However, return fraud in turn dwarfs wage theft by an order of magnitude, and sole proprietor tax fraud in turn dwarfs return fraud. In other words, gotta go after retail customers and small business owners.

@DanielW_Kiwi @Duderichy Is it beneficial for America when employers steal from their workers 5x more than all the thieves in America? You don't think that impacts society? The USSR collapsed because nobody wanted to work for a system they got no benefit from.

@queerBengali See childhood vaccines for example (there's a measles story making the rounds). It is absolutely harmful for them to refuse to give their child the measles vaccine, but they clearly aren't doing so because they *intend* to give their child brain damage.

@queerBengali You call it abuse because you see the impact it has on the kids, while he calls it love because he sees the intent that the parents have. Both of these words (abuse, love) connote both intent and impact, though, hence the conflict.

In the first decade of coming out most kids face severe shitty behavior if not outright rejection from parents. They eventually come around mostly but what the fuck are you babbling on about?
Dilan Esper@dilanesper

The Left historically had some very dumb and bad anti-parent beliefs from the 1960's, and passed down urban legends of multitudes of gay and trans kids being subjected to abuse. But those beliefs are wrong-- indeed, parents are really the ONLY people who love their children.

@Noahpinion @d_erasey @BriannaWu Bostock covers employment, but I don't think there is a case that has extended it to housing yet? HUD under Biden interpreted it as applying to the Fair Housing Act but I can't find a court case affirming that interpretation.

@hecubian_devil So the million dollar question: Are there any trans rights for which we can get *intense* support, not just *broad* support? And if so, how do we get there?

@hecubian_devil so we end up with visas getting upended all over the place. Going back to trans issues, the bathroom bills may have been unpopular, but many got passed nonetheless, the laws were allowed to stand, and the lawmakers faced no backlash, because supporters were fewer but more intense

Because we need to fix the slide in public opinion on trans issues, and we need to know if the public is having a thermostatic response to Trump on this or not (polls differ on that specific question, but it seems like basically “less than other stuff.”)
Keith Orejel@keithdorejel

I mean genuinely given everything going on at the moment why in they world are you even polling the trans sports issue right now unless you’re trying to gin up centrist culture wars issues to deflect from the populist anger over affordability and authoritarian overreach?
