@AdcoakerC Thanks Tony. t’s all there, as you say, and I see the wreck has so far resisted the recent promise to remove its already much pruned masts. Didn’t somebody recently get paid a million or two to try that?

@tattery⁩ this is for you. Zoom in and you can see it all. The wreck and the house. You can even see Sheppey crossing!

@tattery Thank you for asking. And following. The Department is thriving (missing you!) and our move to Bush House is immanent. Hugely welcome given its legacy. But by remaining at the heart of ‘Theatreland’, space is understandably at a premium and the archive is extensive. Arles bound.

Packing my Library. In a reversal of my favourite essay by Walter Benjamin images from the Performance Foundation Archive before it moves: “a relationship to objects not emphasising their functional, utilitarian value but studied and loved as the scene, the stage of their fate”.

@AdcoakerC I look forward to it. I’ve still got unfinished business in Sheerness but presently immersed in a different excavation…

@tattery I fed it old images of the sea view hotel - I’ll do one with the Napier eventually. Glad I got to visit the latter before it shut down! Hope the English translations see the light of day eventually. Best wishes!

This is for @tattery I devoured your big book in <24h when it came out! I wonder when will the complete ‘Island Stories’ will appear? Nobody could see both sides of a conflict like Uwe Johnson. Or reveal the consequences for everybody. Wish he had been with us for longer.

I don’t think so but thanks for putting it in the window, Jarndyce(the last remaining ‘19th century bookshop’) on Great Russell Street.

I'm amused to see that our best local independent bookshop — the Holt Bookshop — apparently won't stock anything that isn't professionally edited. I don't care, particularly, but this doesn't sound like a great tactic for encouraging genuinely local voices.

By adding hand carved wood panels, painting, fabrics and other decorative pieces it is now preserved as he left it when he passed away. Only two thousand people are able to visit each year so if you get the opportunity to go I urge you to do so. It’s truly amazing 🤎 2/3

What an absolute honour to get to visit the National Trust’s 575 Wandsworth Road yesterday with Lambeth Tour Guides Association. This very special house was the home of Kenyan born Khadambi Asalache who over the 19 years he lived there turned it into a unique work of art. 1/3

Delighted to have been awarded one of these to write a History of the Medical Humanities, a strangely neglected topic in the UK.

Universities? The Humanities? Perhaps we should start again, working our way up from the 19th century kindergarten in any broken-down city that might be at hand. Thanks for the larger thought, Lawrence Weschler. March 14, 2024 : Issue #63 open.substack.com/pub/lawrencewe…

I remain baffled how France can build *social housing* like this, which feels better than even luxury housing in so many other places... Designed by SOA Architectes, in Paris
