I sold my firm because I'd rather be doing this work instead. Coaching firm owners through the conversations I spent years avoiding in my own practice — the ones about fees, scope, the client who's quietly become a problem. Turns out those are the conversations I love when they're someone else's! My boundaries weren't perfect AT ALL. That's part of why I write about them now. Here's what I've realized since: Most firm owners try to fix the operations first. The tech, the pricing, the workflow. Operations matter — but starting there is a bandaid. The boundary work has to come first. So I started writing about it. Firm owners send me their hardest conversations — the price increase they can't send, the client they've wanted to fire for years — and I reframe them publicly into something doable. most of us started our firms by handing clients our personal cell number. it felt generous. then it became the thing we couldn't undo. here's the part we skip: have you actually just asked them to stop calling your cell? plainly? most of us never do. every time you answer the personal call anyway, you teach them they're the exception to the rule. rewrite the voicemail message. keep a templated text ready. then ask — and remind as often as it takes. you're not pushing them away. you're doing this for them.

I have not posted in a long time... It has been a rough 5 months... I have a pretty severe case of burnout... I have not been able to focus at all. Since I cannot focus it has made everything really hard... My focus has improved a little. I am working on getting back to my normal self... It will take time... But I am working on it... Many of you have reached out to me and I appreciate it. This is something I have to work out for myself! Better days are ahead...

Great points from @RDriscollCPA and Katy Ayer in our Tax Season Takeaways session! Extensions don’t have to feel like a burden to the client. If it feels like their to-do, it’s uncomfortable. If you carry the timeline, it’s not. Same situation. Different experience.

I sold my firm. For the first time in years, I’m a client — not an accountant. And here’s another thing I see now that I didn’t before: Your tax-season auto-reply? You and I both know what it really says. “I’m drowning. Please don’t need anything from me right now.” You’re not wrong to feel that way. We’ve built an industry where “go away for four months” is the only way to survive busy season. That’s not a personal failing. It’s a broken system. And more firm owners are deciding: that’s not the deal anymore.
