There's soo many why's in the web3 space. I consistently find myself at a point of conflict when I look at the wheel turning on twitter. Why is it taking soo long to fix? Most of the errors in web3 are clear to see but wen lambo is still driving the industry.

Anime can rewrite history—or reimagine it. If you could see one untold cultural story brought to life on screen, what would it be? Let’s dream up some ideas!

Anime x Web3 Industry Deep Dive Series Pt. 1: How is Anime Made and Funded? For all $ANIME investors, @Azuki NFT collectors, and the true anime degens who are curious enough to dive into how this industry actually works—this one’s for you. This is part 1 of my anime x web3 series and a preview of my upcoming industry research report as promised. Part 2, 3, and 4 will be updated soon as well. It’s pretty long, so if unless you mean it, you might wanna go back and do something else. Otherwise, enjoy. 1. Anime production is a high risk business Anime production is an expensive, labor-intensive process divided into three key stages: pre-production, production, and post-production. Pre-production covers things like concept development, scripting, and storyboarding (image below), while production includes key animation, in-between frames, backgrounds, special effects, and CGI. Post-production finalizes everything through editing, dubbing, sound design, and compositing. Each stage requires dozens to hundreds of workers, spanning in-house teams and subcontracted studios. Unlike Western animation, which has largely transitioned to digital workflows, Japan still relies heavily on hand-drawn techniques, making the process even more time-consuming. As of 2023, producing one anime episode costs $170K–200K, and a full season, including marketing, can exceed $2.7M+. Despite anime’s global success, funding remains a high-risk game. While a hit series can generate billions in revenue, many anime fail to break even due to high production costs and complex revenue-sharing structures. Moreover, during Japan’s 1980s economic bubble, studios had easier access to funding, but the 1990s recession forced the industry to adopt a new financing model. 2. The Birth of the Production Committee System To secure stable funding, Japan’s anime industry developed the Production Committee System (製作委員会)—a multi-stakeholder investment model where publishers, TV networks, distributors, merch companies, and ad agencies collectively fund anime projects. Instead of a single company taking all the financial risk, costs are spread across multiple investors. Beyond financing, production committees also manage the project’s budget, oversee production, and control licensing, distribution, and merchandising strategies to maximize revenue. This system not only lowered financial risk for studios but also enabled a massive increase in anime production. In 1989, Japan aired just 77 TV anime series; by 2017, this number had surged to 340. 3. The Production Committee Becomes the Industry Standard The first anime to implement this system was Studio Ghibli’s masterpiece Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1985), but it wasn’t until the famous Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995) that it became the industry standard. Evangelion’s success led to rapid adoption, with Pokémon soon following the model. Today, over 80% of anime projects are estimated to be produced this way. A typical Production Committee consists of: - Anime Studios (Toei Animation, Ufotable, MAPPA) → Handle the physical production. - Publishers (Shueisha, Kodansha) → Own the original manga or light novel IP. - TV Networks (Fuji TV, TV Asahi) → Secure broadcasting rights. - Distributors (Aniplex, Toho) → Manage theatrical releases and licensing. - Merch Companies (Bandai Namco) → Finance in return for toy and figure sales. - Ad Agencies (Dentsu) → Secure sponsorships and advertising slots. Since merchandising and licensing dominate anime’s revenue model, production committees prioritize investors with strong distribution networks. 4. Where the Money Comes From Unlike Hollywood, where box office sales are the primary driver, anime’s financial backbone lies in secondary markets. As of 2023, Japan’s domestic anime revenue breakdown was: - 49% Merch & Toys - 22% Arcades & Games - 8% Streaming (OTT Platforms) - 7% TV Licensing & Ads - 14% Others Because of this, production committees structure anime projects with long-term monetization in mind—ensuring that IPs can generate revenue across multiple platforms. 5. In a Nutshell The Production Committee System transformed anime into a scalable, global industry. By securing stable financing and reducing risk, it has fueled the explosive growth of anime over the past three decades. But this model isn’t without its flaws. Part 2 will explore its downsides, the challenges it creates for studios, and its impact on the anime industry moving forward.

Iron sharpens iron. As men, we have a responsibility to empower and uplift each other. Let’s be mindful of the words we speak, not just to others, but also to ourselves. Our words have power, and they can either build up or tear down.
