@seeedstudio @techiesms Where's the gps and lte antenna. The size of the pcb does not mean anything until you count the antennas in. And they are hidden.

📍 What if you could build your own real-time GPS tracker. @techiesms built it with XIAO ESP32-C3 + SIM800C + GP02 GNSS, adding real-time cloud tracking, SOS SMS alerts, voice call support, and a web setup portal. Compact, practical, and built for real-world security use. Watch the full build 👉 bit.ly/42OJY1E

@jh4vaj We’d been using that trick for years on Microchip PIC boards, long before STM32 became so popular. The idea was to arrange the pins in a slight zigzag pattern so a simple 4-pin 2.5 mm programmer connector would lock itself in place when inserted

Spectrum Analyzers: the "Eyes" of the RF World While an oscilloscope shows how a signal changes over time (the time domain), a spectrum analyzer shows signal strength against frequency (the frequency domain). It allows engineers to "see" the individual components of a complex radio signal, making it the primary tool for testing and verifying RF performance.

@i2cjak I have this drill press dremel and IMHO it's not worth it. It's wobbly and lacks rigidity and sometimes it's not vertical. Step above is the Proxxon small drill press. On a larger boards I use to drill just with flex extension.

need to drill a hole in your PCB? Get the Dremel drill press and get PCB carbide bits off Amazon (like $10 for 5 sets of 10 bits). Dremel for high speed, carbide bits so the nasty gross glass fiber doesn’t immediately dull your bits.

@MakeAugusta Yeah I know but I did t know there is a setting for pull speed. I just went all in. Had to put weight on the empty tape and 3d print guide so the tape does not crumble. Ill check my software immediately

@byte_thrasher There are now mcu that are cheaper than 555 solution. Just order pre programmed one spitting board version over 1 wire. I prefer ADC but if you dont want to use one

@emh203 I've been burned. I now usually do my own footprints and triple check them. I have fab in house so it's a bit easier. I sometimes have few versions and do a test run to make sure they will reflow correctly

A bad footprint library will goat fuck you for months, even years, all while bleating loudly on every thrust. Don't get caught in the trap that sch/footprint "libraries" make any sense. Software libraries make sense as they are instantly testable. All public CAD libraries have zero provenance and traceability to anything that matters. A schematic / PCB reference design that has been manufactured 10k times is a much better "library". It has been through reflow oven 10k times. I only use external stuff that I know has gone through a reflow oven at scale. This part is a good example of why: IPC 7531 : horse shit. Kicad libraries : horseshit. Altium 365 : horseshit. SnapEDA : triple horse shit and a dumpster fire The job of librarian is horseshit too. The person who has to stay late to scrape traces or writes the check to cover the fuckup is the one who should make the footprint. They have actual skin in the game. And dont use the excuse "my part is a complex 300 pin device". That is exactly the reason to invest the time. Why would you delegate such a critical thing to an entity who doesn't give a shit out of the outcome?

@eevblog @BrianRoemmele I did probably hundreds of boards at home using transparency or toner transfer. I can do 2 sided board in less then hour. With solder resist in cca 2 hrs. I was doing that for probably 2 decades. I abandoned it when pcb fab became so fast and reliable. It's pointless....

@BrianRoemmele Dude, this is not new. I'm glad you find it exciting, but it's very limiting and the practical use cases are extremely niche. There are plenty of in-house PCB fab technologies, and this is probably the most limited because it has no way to do holes or vias.

@ptrschmdtnlsn It's not only electronics. I had to fix a cooling intake knee for a power plant by welding in one of the Gulf States.Paid 48k for that. It leaked immediately and they had to fix it In Rotterdam for example paying 10% of that price would be considered exorbitant. Let alone China

I asked a major US PCB shop for a quote, and now 17 days later(!) they finally got back to me. They want $2700/board, where JLCPCB will do about $90/board in qty 5 in half the lead time, and an instant online quote. We must improve our manufacturing, as a country.

LumenPnP/OpenPnP is great and all but holy crap do I want to just buy this Chinese miracle of a machine right now. for $3.4k (w/shipping) you can pick and place 3000 components per hour. and it takes 58 reels. and it takes panels up to 400x400mm. insane value

It's difficult to verbally capture this weird, stupid and meaningless collision of styles, materials, dimensions. The closest visual analogy, to my mind, is one of those plates piled high at a hotel buffet by an idiot: with a splodge of curry, some sauerkraut, five potatoes, some lemon pie, a lamb cutlet, smoked herring, and several cheesy crackers, and everything banal and tasteless even before you smush them together. ✍️ Sean Thomas Article | spectator.com/article/we-nee…
