I appreciate this, but must be honest.
1. My field (Sovietology) got a lot wrong.
2. I was a Reaganite, on the right side, but not a major player in that field. (My PhD was in 1988.)
3. FWIW, I rejected the consensus in my field, but that was easy to do by 1988.

FIONA HILL: Massive weakness of Trump that Russia exploits is that Putin knows Trump himself is very prone to conspiracy theories. Putin knows that Trump lives in a world of memes and tropes on Truth Social, and he will take on board almost anything that is fed to him. When I was in Trump’s first administration, Trump would sometimes pick up on things, and you’d realize, “This is Russian propaganda.” That’s actually what I said during first impeachment. Russians are just amplifying all of this because they know Trump will believe it.

I’ll help. Every doctor, healthcare provider, public health expert in this country will help you. Announce your intent to phase out the sale of cigarettes in the US. Put together a 5 year plan to do this. Cigarettes kill almost 500,000 Americans every year. What other product kills 1/2 the people who can’t quit? It’s a leading cause of chronic disease. It causes heart disease, emphysema, stroke, and lung, mouth, throat, esophageal, stomach and bladder cancer. It addicts kids. You say you want to MAHA? This is the way. It’s a big idea, and it will take a lot of political courage. Your family has defined political courage. Do something big. America’s doctors will root for you. We’ll help.
