@Jaaph3 @SandyofCthulhu Yes, indeed. Male aristocrats were often trained as knights in their youth. But castles weren't necessarily inhabited by its lord and his family. Castles were often delegated to castellans, since living in cities was often more attractive than staying in the countryside.

Castles had surprisingly small garrisons. Movies show us hundreds of warriors lined up on a wall, but in reality a standing garrison was often no more than just ten men-at-arms plus a sergeant. I learned this from conversations with two different experts on the topic. Now, if the Welsh or Magyars or Vikings raided, the castle's population soared - local peasants would run to it. If there were time, more soldiers might even show up. But in any case, the actual defense was now a few hundred untrailed peasants, plus women & children, all directed by the men-at-arms. Plus in the castle courtyard all the pigs, sheep, and geese they had gathered (chickens aren't herding animals so had to be left behind). The women would heat water or hand up rocks to the wall defenders to drop on attackers. Of course they didn't use oil - boiling water was way easier. They sometimes just heated sand red-hot in the pot and poured it out. Now, a castle COULD host an armed force, and an attacker can't just ignore it, because it can be used as a base of operations. But taking a castle was quite difficult, even if it only has 10 soldiers 1/3

@SandyofCthulhu Btw, the "untrained peasant" part is a common misconception. Peasants (&citizens) formed the core of medieval armies. Peasants were often obliged to own armor and weapons to serve when called. Many of those sheltering peasants would have served their lord on campaign before.
