@Empty_America Oh, a man of culture! Some years ago I got this edition and keep returning to it. This is actually the heart of the west.

I've been reading Le Mort d' Arthur. It's a *genuine* late medieval book, and very enlightening. More like Game of Thrones than LOTRs, by far. "Amoral" to the point of what we would call psychopathy is the only way to describe it. There is very little clear good versus evil narrative at all, most actions (including grotesque violence) are presented without any clear judgment or moral, and to the extent that actions are disapproved of, it is only because they violate tribal honor culture norms, largely cowardice. It's more sexually explicit than you would think, and like the Canterbury Tales, there is very little if any evidence of religious guilt about these matters whatsoever. Adultery, cuckolding , concubinage, and out of wedlock births are presented as something that happens constantly. Christianity is present in the the background to the tale, but seems more "unworldly" and disconnected from daily life than we are accustomed to, and mixed with sorcery and occult. Seems largely a matter of last rights and perhaps late life repentances, saintly hermits, etc. It is an extremely alien book if you really pay attention.
