Don't know why I used @Yahoo today, but lesson learned. I get that blending ads is the standard now, but this is hostile. Everything above the fold is an ad, and with basically zero visual hierarchy, you can't tell paid from real.

Wifi passwords should disappear everywhere (hotels, homes, airports, restaurants/coffee shops). We probably waste over 100m person hours a year collectively typing in wifi passwords. Your phone should just auto-connect wherever you are, like cell towers. And no, none of those dumb captive portals either (ads) - businesses should be shamed for using these. Hotels don't charge you for electricity when you charge your phone - it's too cheap the meter. Wifi is now the same. Stop treating wifi like some scarce resource that needs to be rationed. If people are treating your coffee shop like an office, and not buying anything, there must be some other solution.

So @Facebook doesn’t let you change your password after logging into a new machine (with two-factor authentication). How long do I have to “use this device” before I can change my password?

The @British_Airways iOS app is the worst I’ve ever used in the world. It’s powered by a web view that crashes the second your connection glitches, boarding passes vanish after a while, bookings don’t load, and more. And the app suggests you “download the app” from within the app. Pure garbage.

Wireless chargers in airplane seats are such a dumb idea. Painfully slow, your phone becomes a hockey puck during turbulence, and you can’t touch it while charging. Keep it simple: give us multiple high powered usb-c ports.

We understand the push for Zoho to go public. But let me state the reality: Arattai would very likely not have been built by a public company that faces quarter to quarter financial pressure. It was a "hopelessly foolish" project, and even our employees had expressed scepticism that Arattai would ever gain any traction. We built it because we felt we need that kind of engineering capability in Bharat. We need a lot lot more of such capabilities in Bharat and we are on it. We have some very ambitious, long range R&D projects going on in Zoho, including compilers, databases, OS, security, hardware, chip design, robotics (not to mention AI) and on and on. In addition, we have invested in many R&D intensive companies that we know won't make money soon. Zoho is a kind of an industrial research lab that also makes money to fund itself. We essentially ignore short term profits, as long as we don't lose money. And we have a culture of founders and senior executives living frugally, like how good scientists and engineers in ISRO would live. To us that is the essence of Bharat. Japan operated that way when it was developing. Imagine saying all that to Wall Street or Dalal Street!

My brother Kumar wrote a post titled: "How patient execution beats aggressive capital" which is a must read for entrepreneurs: zoho.com/the-long-game/… Kumar started the company in Chennai that eventually became the Zoho today. Practically every senior manager at Zoho was personally recruited fresh from college and trained by Kumar back in the 1990s. Zoho would not exist without Kumar. I want to quote this gem from his post: "முயலும் வெல்லும் (the hare can win) ஆமையும் வெல்லும் (the tortoise can also win) முயலாமை என்றுமே வெல்லாது (but not trying never wins)" The word "Muyalaamai" in Tamil combines "muyal" (rabbit or hare) and "aamai" (tortoise) and it also means "not trying" and Muyalaamai comes from the word "muyarchi" which means "effort" or "trying". So it means "Go fast like a rabbit or go slow like a tortoise but keep trying" but the Tamil version is much more poetic.

A common sentiment we hear is: "Why don’t you market yourselves into prominence?" Fair point. There are different schools of thought on this. If we look at most SaaS companies: - Around 20–25% of revenue goes to cloud infrastructure (AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, etc.). - Around 50–60% goes to sales and marketing. That means 70–80% of revenue flows to middlemen. At that point, you have to ask: are you really an independent, sovereign company, or just a reseller of others’ technology? Heavy investment in sales and marketing will create visibility. Using public clouds will speed up time to market. But both come at a cost: dependence on duopolies and triopolies for your very existence. If you want to remain sovereign, you need a different approach. One alternative approach, the approach we take, is to focus on building something truly valuable. It may be ignored for a long time, but eventually it gets discovered. Nvidia, ASML, TSMC, etc, were doing the same solid work for decades before being "discovered." It’s often better to be discovered later, with a mature product, than to sacrifice sovereignty for quick visibility.
