@SebAaltonen Those are not similarly priced windows laptops. Thag is msrp for the Neo and heavy discounts for the rest. Here in Au those Windows laptops are 30-50% more expensive than the Neo when they are on sale (they are usuallh proced against the Air).

@novikoff My only concern is the lack of keyboard back light. Have a laptop without it and it is bad. But might be ok with white keyb and black letters, donno

Asus seems to have killed with the new Panther Lake ExpertBook. Better screen, better keyboard, 50% lighter(!), matching battery life, and overall great performance vs M5 MacBook Pro. Huge credit to @intel for this turn around!! youtube.com/watch?v=Q77Azv…

Lamport's Time, Clocks, and the Ordering of Events in a Distributed System is one of the most important systems papers of all time. It formalizes something kinda obvious: Within a timeline everything happens in an order defined by events it observed (I threw a ball, you caught it), but on two separate timelines, like two people offline on their laptops, two events *aren't* ordered with respect to each other. It's impossible to merge these timelines together in the general case, no matter how accurate clocks are. It's like those movies where two people go down different timelines: you can't merge those together no matter how good their watches are. To build local sync you have to accept one of three things: 1. Sometimes data loss will occur, e.g., last-writer wins. 2. There's a specific lossy or domain-specific API you can use, e.g., operational-transforms, CRDTs, or client-side merge logic. 3. Different people see different timelines forever, which is fine for some applications. A lot of the interesting work in local-first happens around option #2. How to limit operations users can perform to those that can be acceptably merged together or where it's ok to have certain kinds of data loss.
Aaron Boodman@aboodman

@devagrawal09 @powersync_ Because conflicts 😆. Take your typical relational schema offline. Make arbitrary writes to it. Come back online while collaborators were also editing. The conflicts cannot always be merged. Even with human intervention. They can be arbitrarily complex.

I finally landed on a memory-optimal way to render audio waveforms in the browser. The full audio is decoded once, then chunked into 2s bins. Each bin stores peaks at 800 peaks/sec in a Uint8Array. Bins are persisted individually in IndexedDB, which keeps the data as raw Uint8 arrays and is faster to read than OPFS. Local or session storage wouldn’t work here. A 2h video ends up as ~5.76 MB cached on disk. While scrolling or zooming the timeline, I load only the visible bins and downsample them to the required resolution. Everything runs async and I never keep more than a single bin in memory at once, ~800 bytes. Rendering supports mixed resolutions in the same pass since bins arrive async. By caching a read index and sorting bins ascending, each peak lookup stays O(1). On refresh, I wipe the IndexedDB so cache size never gets out of hand.
