A Green Source responds to this from Caroline Lucas: "The problem is that we just don't know which Andy Burnham is going to turn up. Will it be the Blairite politician who went along with years of privatisation and welfare cuts, or the one who has publicly supported proportional representation and expressed support to make changes to the failed economic model? We just don't know."

I hope this isn’t true. There are times when it’s more important to put country before party. This is one of them. Burnham’s longstanding commitment to a fairer voting system could transform our democracy & counter dire threat of a Reform UK government theguardian.com/politics/2026/…

The Greens shouldn't stand against Andy Burnham in Makerfield. We wouldn't win. It would damage our credibility. Reform would 100% get in. And a successful Burnham would owe greens a favour and be more likely to not contest key green targets in a general election.

I'm a Green Party member and will be campaigning for a council by-election candidate this weekend. But, if I was in Manchester, I would be campaigning for Burnham. Stopping Reform matters far more than party politics.

Our 2025 investigation revealed how pro-Israel lobbyist Trevor Chinn has donated to Wes Streeting and Angela Rayner, two of the candidates reportedly vying to take over from Keir Starmer.

I think @TheGreenParty should not put up a candidate in Makerfield but should say they support Burnham It is absolutely crucial that Reform do not win Burnham already supports Proportional Representation. He should make a pledge to the Greens to pursue this as prime minister

Our current first-past-the-post voting system is hugely undemocratic, allowing a political party to secure a massive majority of seats on a minority vote. We need to introduce proportional representation now to ensure every voice is heard and every vote counts.

Declassified UK just exposed the pro-Israel lobby's grip on the UK Labour Party. Pro-Israel lobby donated to 13 of 25 members of Keir Starmer's cabinet. Trevor Chinn, a key figure, said: 'I've spent my entire life working for Israel.' Chinn donated to Starmer, David Lammy, Lisa Nandy, Rachel Reeves, Angela Rayner, and Wes Streeting.

@telegram1982 @EllieChowns It depends on the type of PR. Open List PR and Single Transferable Vote both let you vote for specific people in the party rather than just a party vote like in FPTP and Closed List PR

Despite it being obvious that the time of two-party politics is over, the govt laid out no plans to introduce a fairer voting system in the King's Speech. That's why Green MPs tabled an amendment on the need to bring in proportional representation and make every voice heard.

@telegram1982 @LauraPidcock But we need to win over the libs at some point, do we not? He has clearly changed his mind. This is a good thing. And I've no illusions in him or the Greens. But libs shifting left is a good thing.

Who the next Labour leader will be is inconsequential. Why? Because even though the hopefuls will cynically talk ‘left’, appeal for unity and talk about working class communities, none of them will challenge capital-a necessity to make even the most moderate changes we so desperately need.
