An asteroid is hurtling towards Earth. The world’s diplomats come together to address the emergency. And they spend the whole time talking about how to create “market mechanisms” to try and avoid actually paying for asteroid defense. That’s basically #COP25 so far.

Why should we worry about double counting under #Article6 of the #ParisAgreement at #COP25? Let us explain with this cartoon strip, with characters representing countries. Thread below. ⬇

"Even as coal fades...." A 0.9% fall in global coal emissions is NOT fading. A 10% fall in global coal emissions is fading. Anyone that thinks "coal is done" is missing the urgency with which the world needs to act...

Emissions of carbon dioxide from fossil fuels hit a record high in 2019, researchers said, putting countries farther off course from their goal of halting global warming nyti.ms/33NvluO

In fact, its all those night time setbacks which create a huge morning peak as every building recovers +- 10 degrees. I think we would be better off (no math yet) keeping the house warm (which will use more kWh) but will result in less morning peak.
Ben Paulos@BenPaulos

@pecanstreetinc @eGaugeSystems @goldenmatt It turns out my house here in Berkeley is a microcosm of this problem. Here is my chart: green is PV output, yellow is my (gas) furnace power demand. It's true that I set my thermostat back in the day and overnight, but also that heating load declines in the day. (next slide)

Worth a read! Three important messages immediately catch my eye (among others) 1) There is evidence that capacity markets drive excess capacity, 2) consumers end up paying more, 3) capacity is not the service needed to support reliability.

Airlines going for offsetting to deal with their carbon emissions - make sure they work (history says they often don’t) - that it allows aviation to carry on business as usual (it mustn’t) - in a zero C world there’ll be nowhere to offset to #greenwash france24.com/en/20191119-ea…

Climate change is now high on the political agenda. Ever higher targets are adopted but emissions keep rising. We need real policy and regulatory change now not in 2030. theguardian.com/environment/20…

@SZaitschenko @henryadamsUK @PowerTechnology Agreed, they don't 'store' thermal energy in the traditional sense. By removing thermal energy from a fridge (for example) you do create a potential which is analogous to the chemical storage in a battery. Either way, it is an interesting way to lower demand when it is needed!

10 years ago, EU member states committed to phasing out fossil fuel subsidies by 2025. However, as of today, not a single EU country has yet spelled out a plan to phase them out. Next step: 🇪🇺governments must fix this in their 2030 climate plans #NECPs. friendsofeurope.org/insights/subsi…

@SZaitschenko @henryadamsUK @PowerTechnology The term 'virtual battery power' may be a tad misleading, but I think what it is referring to is that the such a scheme would be 'storing' thermal energy in the fridges and air conditioning chillers. This would allow for their realtime demand to be lower during periods of low VRE
