Americans don't understand Asian values.
We care less about freedom & democracy; and more about cultural values -- family, education, spirituality, perseverance etc.
So, a figure like Xi Jinping is not "authoritarian," if he delivers results & shows compassion for the people.
Just like how Asian parents are "authoritarian" by Western standards, but it is underpinned by love.
If you don't get it, you won't get it.
(BTW, these values are surprisingly the same all over Asia -- from Japan to India and China to Indonesia)
