The most iconic landmark in horse racing was in-spired by an insane asylum. I'd think I was the crazy one saying that, had I not learned it firsthand. Tomorrow 150K+ people at Churchill Downs Racetrack will look up at the Twin Spires and feel something (besides the Mint Juleps, LOL). Some will feel nostalgia from when they went as a kid. Others will be soaking in the magic of being so close to legendary horses and jockeys. None of them will be thinking of an insane asylum and the haunted grounds it left behind. They're missing that part because it's been cut from the narrative. The famous Twin Spires were designed in 1895 by a 24-year-old architect named Joseph Baldez. When you read the official story from Kentucky Derby Museum (previous client of mine), they'll tell you he felt the grandstand "needed something to give it a striking appearance." The spires were just a decorative finish. That is true, but Churchill Downs leaves out the whole story. Baldez worked at D.X. Murphy & Brother, which is now known as Luckett & Farley. When looking at the plans for Churchill, Baldez made a legacy making suggestion: What if we added two spires on the top? That story's still told to this day. What's usually left out is that Baldez was almost certainly inspired by the spires on top of the now-gone Central Kentucky Lunatic Asylum. That asylum's main administration building had two prominent steeples and was an architectural icon at the time. The spire inspiration is clear to see when you see them in this picture. I learned this over a decade ago when I led the rebrand for that famed firm, Luckett & Farley, which is one of the longest continuously run firms in the country. It's an incredible story, with dark corners when you zoom in: ▪️ A documented 900 people were buried in and around what is now Tom Sawyer Park in Louisville. ▪️ Some have estimated that more than 5,000 unmarked graves exist in the area. I've run hundreds of miles in Tom Sawyer Park. My wedding reception was there. I have many great memories there, and one creepy one. One time when walking my dog there at dusk, he started barking at a tree that was over 100 yards away. I decided to let him check it out. As we got closer, I realized there were grave stones I couldn't see from that distance. The dog was LOCKED on one stone, as if he could sense something I couldn't see. This was before I knew the folklore. We high tailed it out of there. Even worse are the stories of Sauerkraut Cave, but that's too much for a LinkedIn post. Happy Oaks Day / Derby Day to those who celebrate. When you're looking at the Twin Spires and feel something deep inside of you or in awe of their simplistic beauty, just know you're not alone. Or crazy.

A truck loaded with thousands of copies of Roget's Thesaurus spilled its load leaving New York. Witnesses were stunned, startled, aghast, stupefied, confused, shocked, rattled, paralyzed, dazed, bewildered, surprised, dumbfounded, flabbergasted, confounded, astonished, and numbed.
