Just about every single criticism ever applied to Rings of Power works just as well for The Odyssey. The only difference is that Nolan is High Status, so people are more inclined to beclown themselves on his behalf.

@piliponful Yeah i think Korea is a good point of comparison bc they share similar economic structures in some ways (state investment driven, Japanese zaibatsu, Korean chaebol). Low rates in Japan made zombie co's while Korea was more dynamic and has now surpassed Japan per capita

@testsu66 Yeah I actually read some on Japanese financial system and compared it to US, they have some very strange approaches that are tied to their cultural difference I would say. 0 interest rates and still almost a deflationary economy is kinda insane which is what they had for years.

@piliponful Ofc if you want to make business connections Tokyo area is best. And I don't dislike Tokyo, I just appreciate the shitamachi areas more. People are a bit more distant, but if you're outgoing at all that can be overcome

@piliponful So I only ever lived in the three main tourist cities..., Tokyo, Osaka, kyoto. Osaka imo is the best. People are friendly, it's less polished than Tokyo, dirtier.

@piliponful Even for my friends where it worked out well you are talking a serious comp cut by being in Japan. One does data science/ml for top pharma co. His compensation is top percentile for Japan but that's like 1/3 what he would make here in the US doing the same thing

@piliponful My other friend that was a freelancer there had a Japanese wife so that's the other way to get the visa thing worked out...

@piliponful Yeah. Well It's always been Japan that I cared about. I've never really done the global tourism thing...I think if you really care about a culture and spend some time learning the language then that's ethical globalism lol

@testsu66 Yeah I honestly kind of hate all the globalized cities, even a little bit, even though it kind of creates a logical dissonance with me wanting to go as a foreigner and hating globalization.

@piliponful I just replied on another thread but basically I put being in Japan over career. So I spent a few years having fun but not a great use of time...

@testsu66 Wow, I think I can guess in what way, but can you elaborate with some examples?

@piliponful So that's what I'm saying by it messed my life up a bit. Japanese grad schools are pretty mid and it ate 3 years of my life.

@piliponful Yeah exactly I did one year of undergrad there and then grad school was another couple years then worked there a little. Imo best way to go is as an English teacher. You can get a visa that way pretty easily and the work isn't hard. From there it's much easier to transfer

@piliponful But Japan is also different now. Is much more globalized, tourists everywhere. When I went even back in 2012 you were treated like a celebrity if you went anywhere even slightly off the beaten path (as a white guy). Everyone wanted to talk to you, it was fun

@piliponful For me it wasn't really a choice, I was the classic weaboo in high school so I was always going. It did me up my love in some ways but that first year studying abroad in Japan was the best year of my life so I don't really regret it
