We don’t need ICE agents rolling up like it’s Fallujah. We need them disarmed, demilitarized, and reined in. No more playing soldier in American neighborhoods. No more separating families with the threat of deadly force. No more treating immigrants and citizens alike as enemy combatants. Congress must act: strip ICE of its military-grade weaponry, end the expansion of its tactical units, and return immigration enforcement to something resembling due process and humanity — not this dystopian spectacle of fear. The right screams ‘law and order’ while cheering state violence against the vulnerable. We see you. And we’re done pretending this is normal.

They are looking for Latino men at construction sites and supply stores, listening for who is speaking Spanish, and stopping them. In the cases of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo and Joan Sebastian Guerrero, they have engaged in cold-blooded murder. The nightmares had finally subsided, but now they come rushing back -- the ones about my son Paul, adopted from Guatemala as an infant in 2007, the ones where I bolt awake, drenched in sweat, heart pounding, sobbing, screaming, "No!" as I picture ICE agents pulling over Paul's car, pointing guns at his head, demanding proof of his U.S. citizenship, then scoffing as he hands one of them his license. One shouts, "Out of the car!" Another smashes out the passenger side window before opening fire. I do not recognize my country anymore -- and I do not recognize my Church among the millions of conservative Catholics who helped elect this monster and continue to support his draconian, racist, hateful immigration policies based on cruel lies.
