The WIMP paradigm has ruled all screens for nearly forty years. In the 20-teens, we began moving off of screens, but not off of WIMP. 2021 is a good year to fix that. Let's do this!

@creepydotorg Picture an orange w/ 3” equator. Make a slit from n pole to s pole. The peel is stretchy; it will never break. Grab the n pole w 2 fingers and stretch apart 3”. Same to s pole. Now it’s a flat square. The closer to either pole, the more it stretched. Equirectangular projection.

@BeanerCarr @purplepopuluxe @RealJamesWoods @grok Watch the song “Feed Me” from Lil Shop of Horrors on YouTube. The plant says “there must be someone you can 86 real quiet like and get me some lunch.” It has always meant kill. When I waited tables, the manager said “86 means kill.” Restaurants got it from military code.

@mmoraleeg @purplepopuluxe @RealJamesWoods @grok I waited tables in college. We used 86 as “out of stock” but the first time I heard the term was at 5 years old in the song “Feed Me” in Lil Shop of Horrors when the Man-Eating Plant says “There must be someone you can 86 real quiet like and get me some lunch.” It means kill.

@purplepopuluxe @RealJamesWoods @grok No.. we use it in restaurants.. it means either don’t sell a certain item because we’re out of it or it means take it off the menu.. or in this case it means fire an employee

@martinsit Cool start. I recommend putting it in the hands of 100s of game/vfx artists ASAP. I suspect you’ll find them saying 3 things: 1) Can it topo well the 1st time so I don’t have to retopo? 2) Can it gen PBR out-of-the-box so I don’t have to re-texture? 3) Why is it not a plugin?

@AntoniaRForster Scriptable objects to enable consistency across play modes. Consider bottom-up logic: spawned obj can toggle & delete self in most cases. Only separate necessary class is the factory to spawn it. If toggle/delete must be separate, consider observer mediators instead of singleton.

Hey Unity dev friends. If you're creating an Editor tool (Script A) to spawn/destroy some objects in the scene, and you want a separate tool (Script B) to enable/disable those objects at runtime (toggle visibility, not destroy them), what's the tidiest way to architect that? If you make Script B a singleton, then you need a third class to act as a shared manager in both Edit Mode and Runtime, right? It feels untidy... is that normal practice? Is there an obvious other option I'm missing? #unity3D #Csharp

@KenPfeuffer Lots of interesting ideas here. Since gaze for selection runs into trouble w/ clusters, I’d love to see this w/ gaze setting a ballpark volume in which the hand gets a proxy cursor to fine-tune selection prior to pinch.

@KenPfeuffer Cool study. It shows why indirect perspective-based manipulation is faulty and should be mostly replaced by indirect proxy. I’d like to see this study include indirect proxy as an option. I suspect it would show direct and indirect proxy are similar speed up to ~3 meters.

@benz145 2/For instance, if you didn’t have the video in the can, I’d have suggested a dual-screen showing VR hands that suck on one side, Alyx hands on the other, w/ no more than 2-3 words in the thumbnail, e.g. “BAD” and “GREAT” and then…

@Jason @balajis By your logic, one should be even more skeptical of TSLA. TSLA is allowed to trade publicly, while BTC does better even though it’s barred from sale in ETFs by corrupt politicians.

interest in bitcoin continues to wane (at least by volume) & price range has tightened @balajis lost $2m betting it would hit $1m (correct?), & despite the American Declinists hyperventilating, it has yet to spike even in chaotic times 🤔 Any theories/predictions? 🧐

@ID_AA_Carmack Also, speaker companies want us to believe the non-headphones version would be higher quality. Not true. Any given HRTF encodes 100s or 1000s of points of spatial resolution. I think Atmos can do 32 max, so headphones is always better.

@ID_AA_Carmack Wwise and FMod provide a state machine for this. AMD attempted to automate it w/ TrueAudio. Only problem is… lots of studio don’t understand 3D audio so a lot of them don’t use the tools properly.

Has anyone ever made a PC VR spatial audio setup that used fixed speakers in a room so no headphones are necessary? Ideally apps would directly mix for the speakers, but you could also “reverse spatialize” head tracked headphone audio to world locked speakers.

@DrJimFan Apple & Google have trained models on this for years. The problem: every word has 3 guesses only & 1st letter has 10s of 10000s of options. It’s the corner case to rule them all. LLM may get it from 96% to 97%. Never to 100%. Anything under 100% = we hate autocorrect.

Million dollar idea: LLM keyboard. Every time I type on my phone and autocorrect makes a stupid mistake, it screams LLM. This is *literally* next word prediction. We should be typing 10x faster. Input methods need serious upgrades. The LLM doesn’t have to be big and can be optimized to run locally to reduce latency and keep privacy. It also needs no prompt engineering or instruction tuning. Combined with methods like swipe-type, LLM keyboard could in principle render full sentences with an unbroken thumb movement. We’d finally be able to type at the speed of our stream of consciousness!

@LeirielVR @WhiteVanVR1 RE: closed hand, I wrote a few medium articles a while back to explain why I think closed hand is the only universally cross-platform action that has legs. RE: fatigue, you CAN fatigue those muscles in 5 minutes. But w/ proper technique, you can go all day w/out fatigue.

@Sean_McBeth @auradeluxe You can infinitely clone the source of Bitcoin. The clones are worthless. The original holds all the value because it was first, therefore most popular, therefore most secure. If a rival clone could exceed its hash rate, it would replace Bitcoin as the only valuable copy.

@auradeluxe Also why "blockchains for uncensorable transfer of value" also doesn't make sense. Again, on which chain? The gov could overnight decide cryptocurrency is an illegal payment structuring system to avoid money laundering controls. You're right back to being in the bootleg market.
